You Can't Play in Our Back Yard

Randy Jones
Remember back in the mid 70's and 80's when our Government was running around all over the Arab world playing one against the other and training one country to defend against another? Well the deck may have stacked its self against us this time. According to a current Associated Press report it seems that Pakistan does not want us or our allies pursuing the Taliban into their borders without playing by their rules.

This in essence to 7.5 billion dollars in military aid being offered to Pakistan to assist in reinforcing their borders against Taliban infiltration. I can not help but wonder why they are taking a stand against forces proceeding past their borders either they do not want their population in a Hugh military action or my favorite is that we will more than likely find more than we expected and I believe that the Pakistani Government truly realizes this.
What really bothers me is the fact that we have come into our self created catch 22. If after all the debates and arguments are finished and Pakistan still will not settle on the U.S. or allied forces coming into the region past their borders what will be the Obama administrations next course of action? Do we conduct re-con flights in hope to find Taliban holds from the air or do we just say we are on a mission and proceed anyway and have the rest of the world demonstrate against us again for entering into another country again. The big issue at hand is can the United States taxpayers afford a continuous objective of chasing the Taliban from border to border?

Another question I have is why in the middle of an economic crisis in this country are we offering to give 7.5 billion dollars in military aid to a nation that has already shown signs of noncooperation in some affairs dealing with the current campaign in Afghanistan. I believe we do need to search out Taliban strong holds and training camps through this region. (But)! I am 100% sure that given our track record in past decade in the middle east it would seem that there may be those regions who even though have had a change in leadership over the past decade will still hold some what of a grudge against us for our participation in supporting offenses and defenses during their battles among each other. This makes it very hard to deem who can be trusted as far as information and who is sending us on a goose chase.

There may be a truth showing here that is becoming more evident than ever. Despite our efforts in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban and to seek out the leaders of many of it's groups if Pakistan refuses to cooperate in the effort we maybe setting outside their borders while the Taliban grows stronger inside of it. Meanwhile opposition may grow in the United Nations as well as allied countries that we will bully our way into other borders to pursue our own objectives regardless of their defiance.

We have come to a point with this war on terror that we are going to have to rally the allies in a large scale effort to seek and destroy these Taliban strong holds and make it clear that if we pull out and the terrorist grow stronger it may not be us who has the next attack launched on peaceful soil. For the Pakistani Government I honestly believe they have had their own agenda since the beginning of this war and there needs to be a strong statement issued to them just as President Bush said while in office, if you help or hide the Taliban than you are the enemy.
