I went to the Subway on Wards Rd in Lynchburg, VA (not the one in Wards Crossing shopping center) on August 8, 2007. I asked the lady to make me an Italian BMT on Italian Herbs and Cheese bread. This is my usual order. As she went to place the meat on the sandwich, I told her that I wanted it made so that the meat would be on the bottom. Ever since Subway started making the sandwiches upside down, I've been requesting this and it has never been a problem.
She responded that she wasn't allowed to make it that way. When I inquired as to why I couldn't have my sandwich made that way, she became rude and said that Subway Corporate doesn't allow them to make the sandwiches that way.
I told her that she could keep her sandwich and I walked out. Using my cell phone, I called directory assistance and asked for the Subway on Memorial Ave. in Lynchburg, VA. I was so upset at this point that I burst into tears when the man answered the phone. Between sobs, I asked if he would make me a sandwich with the meat on the bottom.
His reply was no. Still crying, I told him how ridiculous it was that I couldn't get Subway to make me a sandwich with the meat on the bottom. He actually had the gall to try to lecture me on Subway policy. Giving up, I hung up on him and went to eat at Arby's. Considering I have a sensitive stomach and cannot eat regular fast food, I am lucky that I didn't get sick.
I could understand if I was requesting something that'd take extra time or cost the restaurant money. But I'm not. I'm only asking for the sandwich to be made on the bottom of the bread rather than the top because it tastes better. Is this such a terrible request? And it does seriously affect the taste of the sandwich when the oil and vinegar aren't allowed to run down into the rest of the sandwich (once it's flipped over after being made, the mayo, mustard, etc. is on the bottom). Basically, Subway is forcing me to eat their subs upside down if I want my sandwich to taste close to how it should. But who wants to do that?
As for their toppings... I'm a bit confused as to why Subway refers to its lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives, etc. as toppings considering that they are technically on the bottom. I guess they need to have some name changes to match their odd sandwich-making practices.
I challenge everyone out there to stand up for the right to choose to have a sandwich made normally. The next time you go to Subway, ask for your sub to be made with the meat on the bottom. Let them know that it isn't acceptable for them to be that controlling if they want their customers to return.

Post a CommentI thought I was the only one who noticed this! Whenever I request the meat on the bottom I don't get the useless rhetoric, but a blank dumb stare of a mindless teenager annoyed that I even walked in the door. Customer service is dead, and so is my taste for subway.
I agree that this is the dumbest thing ever.
I always request my Subway BMT be made with the meat on the bottom as well. I have never been told that I can't have my subway made that way "yet". I agree totally with the article's author and also think Subway's policy on how they make their sandwiches is stupid.
This actually happened to me as well. But its even more ridicule, I ordered a philly cheese steak sandwich and I asked for Honey Mustard, Then the worker puts Chipotle sauce on my sandwich and says Philly Cheese Steak comes only with chipotle sauce... I ended up eating half of the sandwich and throwing the rest out. Very disappointed..
I just noticed my local subway is doing this as well. Not only was it better right-side up but I even miss the little triangle they used to cut out of the top of the bread (sigh).
You're right, just passing..., I was very stressed that day. I had been at a new job for only about 2 weeks when this happened and I was so afraid I was going to be late. The job was a lot of pressure, but I only had it for about 2 months before moving on to something else.
I hate my sandwiches upside down too - but I think I'm more worried about your welfare here. By all means get grumpy, get militant, make complaints, etc. I agree with you and I support you. But I really think you need to examine the stresses in your life. Take it easy honey, see the good things and don't sweat the small stuff. Don't let these turkeys get to you.
Subway queen...you are exactly right! that is how it should be trained universally..."the customer IS always right" Heck...i'll put your meat and cheese on the bottom, and do alittle dance if it is requested ;) I am also sorry for your bad experience...hope you have more luck in the future =)
I make the sandwich to the customers request. I was trained "the customer is always right' I am so sorry that you had a bad experience!
I can't stand my sandwiches upside down either. I also hate that the mayo or mustard is squirted over the meat and veggies rather than spread on the bread like before - I do ask them to do this and I've never had a problem. I'm not sure if my local subway will make my sandwich right side up but I'll ask in the future. Why put meat on top of veggies? I miss the subway of the early nineties when the sandwich was upside up and also even instead of lopsided.
