Let's face it, America's love affair with food is on the rise. According to the National Restaurant Association, nearly half of all the money American's spend on food this year will be spent on eating out. Eateries are expected to rake in a record $511 billion dollars. This is why catering is such an attractive career. In addition, you can work as much or as little as you like doing something that you love. Not only is cooking creative but it makes others happy too. Besides at home and office delivery, there are a number of other catering opportunities available:
* Preparing meals for private banquets and hotels.
* Catering meals to airlines.
* Furnishing food for weddings and other special occasions.
* Cooking for parties aboard yachts.
* Delivering food to construction workers and others who can't get away for a lunch break.
And the best part is, although experience in cooking for groups is a must, you don't have to have a degree or be a gourmet chief. If you don't have the experience that you feel you need, start by getting a part-time job cooking at a restaurant. When you feel comfortable enough to step out on your own begin to take on smaller jobs.
There are other skills for catering success such as people skills: You will be working with a large variety of people such as businessmen and women, suppliers and clients and knowing how to effectively communicate and get along with them is vital. It's important that even when things get chaotic you remain pleasant and courteous.
Knowledge about sanitation, safe and proper food handling and storage, dishwashing and food transportation procedures. Organization and planning are extremely important as well, because catering requires attention to detail. Planning skills and abilities come into play when planning out meals and menus for events. The cleanup afterwards will need to be in place as well. This can be done by yourself or by hiring others. Overall catering can be a very enjoyable an extremely profitable depending upon who you are cooking for.
