You Can Help: Make a Donation or Send a Card to Michael Brewer

Ms. Marie
Dr. Nicholas Namias, head of the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital, reported that Michael Brewer is on a ventilator, and his burns remain life-threatening. Michael is still at risk for serious infection, and possible organ failures. Also, the fact that Michael probably inhaled some smoke from the incident is not good. Because so much of Michael's body was burned doctors believe that it may be hard to conduct skin grafts to make repairs. This is due to the fact that skin grafting is normally successful when a person's own skin is used for the graft.1 It usually takes four, five or six days for burn victims to become sick, and Michael has a lot of inflammation.

If you would like to help Michael Brewer and his family during this horrific time you can, Make a Donation to Michael Brewer's Recovery Fund.

Although, we are all struggling to understand the cruel behavior of these five teens we must not become so angry that we ourselves become evil. Justice is one thing, but lashing out at one another's opinions and arguing over which is right is not the answer; and it will serve no purpose in helping teens.

We have a very serious, dangerous, and sad problem here. Teen violence, crime, drug and alcohol use are what we should be addressing. Parents have to take off their "rose colored glasses" and accept the fact that good kids do bad things. For example, Sherry Jarvis, two of the suspects' mother told CBS that her sons are good kids with good grades and no problems in school.2

However, it is questionable how good the Jarvis brothers really were and to hear their mother say such a thing may anger many, but in her mind that is what she chooses to believe. Sadly, this makes one wonder how well this parent knew her child(ren). "Wrong place, wrong people." This attitude will not teach those boys or any other teens to take responsibility for their choices or actions. They were not kidnapped and forced to be there and participate. And authorities say that Jarvis and Bent laughed when questioned about the attack.

Parents should be accountable for their teens, it is up to them to raise their children. It's great to see good grades and never get a call from school, but a parent needs to be aware of what their teen is doing with their free time as well. Who does your teen hang out with? What does your teen get involved with while they are out and about roaming the streets? Parents cannot blame others for their teens decisions, or the choice they make when choosing friends. Peer pressure is unavoidable, but if a parent takes the time and effort to teach their child how to make good choices they will continue on that path when they become a teen.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Dennis Bent may not know his son as well as he thinks he does, too many teens walk out the door and parents have no clue what they do or don't do...but it is no surprise that his, Matthew Bent's, father is "sticking with" "My son is innocent"

  • Rachel10/20/2009

    From ABCnews.com:

"My son is innocent and that's what I'm sticking with," said Dennis Bent, father of 15-year-old Matthew Bent, who is charged.

What a loser. He probably thinks his son will "get away" with it because they're black, and nobody will DARE prosecute a black boy! GMAFB

    One more:
    5. If you want to "Take-Action" I recommend you write to State Attorney Michael J. Satz, Broward County Florida, requesting that he exercise is authority and prosecute all of these boys as adults for this horrific crime. As was posted in the paper, State Attorney Satz, has yet determined if he will seek prosecution for these boys as juveniles or adults. I believe they should all be prosecuted as adults.

Those parents of the Five are total and complete failures...I don't care what they say about their boys. It's a joke how Bent's father insists his son is innocent, when his son was the one who gave the "order". They should turn their backs on those failed little monsters and leave them up to their fate, because the whole country is howling for their blood.

We can all do things about this situation:

    1. If you are religious, pray daily for God to heal Mikey quickly, for someone with means to step forward and pay his bills, and for the judge to come down hard on those 5 animals.

    2. Send Mikey a get-well card. Just pick one up on your weekly trip to the store.

    3. Donate something, even $50, toward Mikey's expenses. All Bank of America branches are taking donations for him.

    4. Email everyone you know about Mikey's story and ask them to email everyone THEY know. Post it on your Facebook status. Get the word out to as many people as possible.

How were these kids raised that they could be this cruel at such young ages?

  • Donita Marie10/18/2009

Yes, J.C. the whole thing is very disturbing, and hopefully more people will, which I'm sure, will send prayers, cards and donations to help him and his family in time of need.

Shari I am sorry, but certainly do understand how hard it is to listen to the 911 call. It gave me chills and made me cry. It is so sad, and justice does need to be served.

  • Shari10/18/2009

I am outraged at what is going on in this world. Where do people get off thinking they can torture someone and inflict so much pain. This little boy was only 15 and it disgusts me. I hope they are all tried as adults. If they could do something this horrible they deserve the death penalty. I am sorry but we as a nation are too soft on criminals. Torture of another human being has to be stopped now!!! I will be praying for Michael and his family, if he were my child I don't know if I could have made it through. I am crying after listening to part of thr 911 call (I couldn't listen to all of it).

  • J.C. Grant10/18/2009

This story is so disturbing. I'm going to send something.
