You Are Just like Your Dad

Bubba
You are just like your Dad! Most of us have heard this at one time or another during out lives. For some folks it is high praise others it is a cutting insult. Think of this. Half my DNA came from my Dad. Y'all know any male can contribute his DNA to be a father. It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to be a Dad. I lived in my Dad's house for 18+ years so his examples were my primary source of education. Is there any question I would be just like my Dad?

I am now 59 years old. I can choose to live in a manner different from my Dad. My Dad was a wonderful man but the last time I checked he didn't have any nail holes in his hands. If I try to emulate all my Dad's character assets and turn around all his character defects, I might be perfect. The only problem is I developed some character defects all my own... I should take responsibility for these since everything isn't my Dad's fault.

I am not mule headed, bullheaded, stubborn, or any other adjective you may choose to describe a focused, purpose filled man. I think I get that from my Mom since my Dad still had all of his when he died. I imagine my son has similar feelings since he to is just like his Dad sometimes. Both my daughters will echo similar sentiments since frequently their respective husbands have been known to say "You are just like your Dad!"

Like most folks I inherited some good traits from my Dad too. Most likely the most important was the love of the children and grandchildren. Without this special love life would be bland and without purpose... Who will spoil the grandkids? Who will find the uneven rows of cookies that need eaten to make the rows even? Who will check the ice cream to see if it's good enough for Granny to eat? Who will teach the little folks about the "Granny's treat cupboard"? Perhaps I am just like my Dad... in some ways.

I guess the next time someone tells me "You are just like your Dad." I'll thank them for the compliment. I know there are many differences but the similarities are easy to spot. Good Looking, sweet personality, NOT Stubborn, and perhaps a bit more humble than a few years ago. Happy Father's Day Mizpah ;-}}>

Well, whoever you're like, I think you turned out just great. I'm betting your lovely wife agrees with me on that--at least most of the time. We just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, and my husband gets more like his dad all the time. Fortunately, I really loved that old man. He was a sweet, kind, humble person, and the world could use more dads like that.

Fortunately, we can choose the good and leave the bad. Good article. Enjoyed it.

If anyone ever said that to me, I'd slit my wrists. I've worked too hard to be the exact opposite.

I've always been told I was more like my dad than my mom too. I miss my dad.
