You Light Up My Life

When the Light Goes Out

Michele Starkey
Locally, we have had our fair share of suicides. A young mother drove into the Hudson River and took her children along with her. One young son was able to climb out of the sinking vehicle and run for help. In the end, it was too late and the mother and three of her children perished.

Just a few days before we left to go camping, another 23 yr-old drown herself in the same location that the other woman decided to end her life. Today, we read in the news that the writer, Oscar-winning 'You Light Up My Life' composer Joseph Brooks, an accused rapist, commited suicide as he was awaiting trial for charges that he sexually assaulted more than a handful of women.

Sunday, as the world was busy living their lives, Joseph Brooks who once sang 'You Light Up My Life' allowed his own light to go out. With so many folks struggling to live their lives as they battle life-threatening diseases, I am left to wonder why still others choose to end it all. Life is worth living because there is a Light that can light up your life.

Someone recently asked me about my inner happiness and if my glass was half-full all of the time and I replied,

"I put the glass down a long time ago. It became too heavy to carry on my own. I found a fountain right around the corner, anytime I need it and I drink often. It is a fount of living water and it comes from my personal relationship with my Lord Jesus.

John 4:10, " Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

Living water. It sustains my life. For others, water is their choice to end their life.

Does anyone else see the irony here?

Wonderful, wonderful testimony tied into such tragedy. It was certainly an inspiration to me today.
