You Live Where? Funny Town and City Names

Ashley Allgood
The name of the city you live in may be very common. Some of the most common names are Franklin, Washington, Greenville and Jackson.

But there are a lot of cities that have some very funny names! Read on and have your funny bone tickled as you learn about some of the funniest and craziest cites and towns in the USA.

1. Needmore, TX : You can find Needmore, TX at the intersections of US Highway 385 and Farm Road 211. This town was founded in the 1920's and they desperately needed more settlers. So the existing settlers named the town "Needmore." Unfortunately, their little public relations stunt did not bring the desired results. The population never broke the 100 mark. By the 1960's the town had a general store, a gin and a population of 4. By 2000 the population was up to 55.

2. Truth or Consequences, New Mexico: Would you believe that New Mexico named a town after a radio show? "Truth or Consequences" was a radio show back in the 1950's . The host Ralph Edwards said he would do the program from the first town that renamed itself after his show. The town "Hot Springs" changed it's name.

3. Between, GA : My husband & I live in GA. I never heard of this town till he told me about it one day while we were driving to Atlanta. I just happened to ask him where we were and he replied "We are in Between." I gave him an odd look and asked again. He said, "We are in the city Between." I was like "WHAT?" The town Between, GA is between two of GA's largest cites Athens and Atlanta. I guess we all learn something every day! There is also a Center, GA.

4. Howey In The Hills, FL: The town is in Lake County, FL. It was founded by William John Howey in 1925. They took the name "Howey In The Hills" in 1927 to reflect the beautiful rolling hills and sparkling lakes. According to the town website the population is just under 1,000.

5. Slaughters, KY : Sure isn't the town I want to live in. A Pioneer Gustavis Slaughter won the right to name the town in a card game in 1855. I wonder if he picked the right name since Slaughters-area historical tornado activity is near Kentucky state average. It is 51% greater than the overall U.S. average according to City Data.

So keep your eyes the open road of the USA. You never know when you'll find yourself in a city or town with one of the craziest names! Ask around and I'll bet you'll found out how it got it's name.

I really enjoyed your article. I live in one of those crazy named towns myself. I live in Gas, KS. Yes the name of my town is Gas. Just think of all the jokes. We are a neat little town with quite a history. A history that I myself will someday begin to write about here at AC.
