You Might be Quoting Shakespeare Without Realizing It!

Unbeknownst to Most, Many Modern Phrases were Coined by William Shakespeare

CSW
A man of words writing 37 plays and composing 154 sonnets, William Shakespeare created works that live on even centuries after they were written. Actually, Shakespeare never published any of his plays. Fellow actors John Hemminges and Henry Condell recorded Shakespeare's work as a dedication after his death. This collection called The First Folio is the source from which all published Shakespeare books originate. The collection serves as important proof that Shakespeare authored his plays. Although he did not publish his plays, Shakespeare dabbled in acting, performing in many of his own plays as well as those of other playwrights. Quick witted and crafty, Shakespeare's plays display a natural talent for combining words that flow effortlessly from the tongue. Are you one who considers Shakespeare's words an of out dated, difficult to understand language. Do you adamantly Shakespeare is "it's Greek to me,"? -You are quoting William Shakespeare!

Have you ever enjoyed a game "played fast and loose"?

Have you "suffered from green-eyed jealousy"?

Do you ever remember being "tongue-tied" or "in a pickle"?

Have you ever been "a laughing stock"?

"If the truth were known" - You are quoting Shakespeare!

Have you "slept not one wink" ?

Did you suspect "foul play" in an attempted "assassination"?

Were you waiting patiently as "the truth will out"?

Have you "stood on ceremony" and "insisted on fair play"?

"The more fool you"- You are quoting Shakespeare!"

How many have stubbornly "refused to budge an inch"?

Do you consider you are "more sinned against than sinning"?

Is it your habit to "act more in sorrow than in anger"?

Have you "knitted your brow" without "rhyme or reason"?

"For goodness sake"- You are quoting Shakespeare!

Can you be a "tower of strength" for your family?

Will you admit when its "too much of a good thing"?

Have you "seen better days"?

Did you ever consider something to be an "eyesore"?

"To give the devil his due" -You are quoting Shakespeare!

Reading this, did you "laugh yourself into stitches"?

Or wish you were "dead as a doornail"?

Is it "high time" to "send me packing"?

"To clear out bag and baggage" and "bid me good riddance"?

"Tut,tut", "the game is up" - You are quoting Shakespeare!

Admittedly, it is best to "neither a borrower or lender be", resources for this article were borrowed from Mortimer B Zuckerman, Chairman and Editor in Chief of US News & World Report. In turn, Bernard Levin of the London Times was Zuckerman's lender. "The long and short of it" the lending is passed on to you!

Surprisingly, I didn't know many of those phrases came from Shakespeare. I always enjoyed his works.. I think he had his pulse on human nature. Enjoyed the article... very informative

great list, I knew there were a lot of everyday quotes form Shakespear, but I never knew how many of them there were. I use these terms day in and day out, and never new. Dead as a doornail was one that I thought was an old saying that came from the midwest! Thanks for the list

Alyce- LOL!! Not really sure if Shakespeare was a woman . . .

As a kid I did not know my mom often quoted Shakespeare and forced reading in High School, found the works too tedious. I did think I was quoting the Bible using "neither a borrower or a lender be" which is Biblical advice. Excellent article. Now, was he really a woman?
