You Are the Salt of the Earth

Please Pass the Salt

Jack Wellman
I understand that salt (sodium chloride) is the only element found in every cell in the human body
Jesus said salt is good (Mk 9:50). He, as creator of life, must know it is essential to human life. Paul says our speech is to be seasoned as salt (Col 4:6). But what is such salt the Bible speaks of? That which Jesus said in Matthew and Paul repeated in Colossians. If we have this (sweet) speech among believers and the unsaved, then we can have peace with one another (Mk 9:50). Our salt can enhance the flavor of any conversation or serving opportunity. There can be at least three types of salt. These might be looked at as the three E's....Encouragement (to give courage), Edification (building others up) and Exhorting (keep on going...He return is imminent!). But this does not mean cramming it down people's throat either. Too much salt ruins the flavor. But just enough can make things more palatable. You can not lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, no, but you can feed him salty peanuts.

Salt has long been a preservative for mankind. In foods, it acts as a preservative and prevents spoilage. The salt Jesus spoke of and which is reiterated by Paul, saves from destruction or ruin. You can see the implications of witnessing to a lost, unsalted (and unsaved) world?

Salt enhances flavor. We can be a sweet savor to other's lives with the sweet, salty speech of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A Jesus that is ready to forgive and cleanse from the putrid effects of sin. Today, the world is in desperate need of the effects of salt, which serves to enhance and compliment whatever it comes into contact with. That point of contact is us.

Salt is also a cleanser (from germs...spiritually speaking, from sins). Salt and crushed ice can clean about any coffee pot stain. And people gargle with warm salt water for medicinal purposes, like eliminating a sore throat. Salt is often in medicines, used as a wound sterilizer and germ killer. By analogy, we can tell them of the Great One Who has cleansed us from our fatal sin-sickness by His wounds.

Finally, salt is, as said before, is vital to survival of any living organism. However, if salt loses it's flavor, then it becomes worthless and is simply thrown away (Mt :13). And too much salt in unpalatable, so my witness can be unsavory to non-believers and leave a bad taste in their mouth. No one likes to be force fed anything. Jesus Himself never forced anyone to listen to Him or force fed His message of salvation. He only offered as much as they would accept.

He will preserve any that come to Him for eternity; incorruptible and for eternity. Keeping forever my mind, body and soul. "All which He has given me, I will lose none...and everyone that believes in Him (Jesus) may have everlasting life and I will raise him up on the last day" (John 6:39-40). "I will in no way caste out" (John 6:37). "No man can pluck them out of my hand, nor...out of my Father's hand" (John 10:28-29).

So, "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready" (Rev. 19:7). "Then the angel said to me, 'Write: "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!'" And he added, "These are the true words of God" (Rev. 19:9). Our salt in deeds and in words may draw others to the wedding feast and the meal to end all meals. The marriage supper of the church and the Lamb of God; Jesus Christ.

I hope at work, in public, in church, anywhere I am or anywhere I go, that I am worth my salt. I pray He use me to enhance other's, and leave a sweet, savory taste. Don't let it be said of me, "he ain't worth his salt". Please go out with me and others and invite them to the coming wedding feast. And, if you can, please "pass the salt".

Over salting is wasteful, good point.

This piece is an illuminating article. We truly need to be the salt and light of the earth before our Lord Jesus Christ comes. Nice work!

As always Jack you have me thinking have to admit I've wondered many times about the 'salt of the earth' but never very deeply - this helps to clear up a lot, thank you so very much for your terrific way with words.

Rhonda, from my imperfect understanding of what the wedding feast means I turn to scriptuers. This great marriage supper is reserved for those who have a zeal for God. From the beginning of time, God has looked for a bride for His Son. Jesus revealed this bride to John on the Isle of Patmos: "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Rev. 21:1-2 "And to her [the church]was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints." Rev 19:8 "And He saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And He saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God." Rev 19:9 "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come into him, and will

you have once again written a wonderful piece. It is so easy to read your writings as they are so graceful, and never forceful in a way that pushes one away. I grew up in a family God Bless them, that were very religious, but sometimes, the way they went about spreading the word actually sometimes pushed me the other way. Your graceful way of speaking(writing) never has that element, and encourages one to want more. Thank you.

Please, explain more to me about this wedding feast. I feel kind of dumb but I don't understand this wedding of the lamb.

I have noticed that some people behave as though they were the pepper.
