Why It's Hard to Lose Weight

When it comes to losing weight, there are plenty of roadblocks to overcome. One very big roadblock is the ease at which you can make excuses for your failures, such as work and family commitments, easy access to an unhealthy diet, no time for exercise, and sometimes injury or illness.

Research shows that the best way to be successful in losing weight is to be sure you have the right goal. Your primary goal shouldn't be to lose weight, but to live a healthier lifestyle. Regular exercise and a healthy eating lifestyle will greatly improve your chances of success and provide you with a much improved quality of life.

Things You Need to Know

If you're going to start a weight-loss program and lifestyle change, you should become familiar with the following information:

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) - BMI is a measurement of your body fat and is much better at determining your health status than weight alone. That's because different people have different body make-ups, such as larger bones or built-up muscles. If your BMI measure higher than 25, then you are considered to be overweight. You are classified as obese if your BMI is over 30. There are high risks of developing diabetes and heart disease when your BMI reaches the 30s.

Your waist circumference - You have a high risk of health problems if you have a very large waistline. If you are male and your waist is larger than 40 inches, you need to work on reducing it as soon as possible. For females, anything above 35 inches is a problem. Large waistlines have been linked to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. To measure your waistline properly, apply a tape measure around your waist just above your belly button but below your ribcage.

Things That Affect Your Weight

Three primary factors determine your weight. They are:

Genetics - Your genetic makeup affects several aspects of your weight. It affects your basal metabolic rate (BMR) which determines how easily you can burn calories. Your appetite and body fat distribution are also affected by the genes passed to you at birth. It's even thought that genes play a part in whether you are an active or inactive type person.

Nutrition - This is extremely important. Your body needs proper nutrition for you to remain healthy, but you also need to limit those foods that are bad for you. So, make sure you get the correct amount of vitamins and minerals and you'll feel better, as well as, have a trimmer figure.

Physical activity - Staying fit is also important for your health, but it's not always easy to find time to work out. To keep your weight in check and improve your health, you don't have to stay on some rigorous daily workout program. Just do your best to stay active by taking every opportunity to burn calories that you can, such as walking instead of riding or taking stairs instead of the elevator. Continuing to have regular physical activity can lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, reduce blood sugar, reduce your chances of getting a disease, and increase your level of fitness.

This is basic information that can help you when you start a weight-loss program. Now that you know the basics, it's time for you to get started losing those pounds.
