You Tube: Revolutionizing Video Distribution

TheChosen1
What is You Tube?

This is an online video sharing site created Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim who were former Paypal employees. The site was created on February 2005 and was sold to Google for $1.65 billion worth of Google stock on November 2006. This site enables people to upload, share and view video content.

-Creating an Account-

Creating an account in You Tube is fairly easy. All you need to do is to fill in email address, password, username, location, date of birth and gender and to tick that you agree to the terms and conditions of You Tube.

-Uploading Content-

It is easy to upload content so long as they are in FLV, MP3, MP4, 3GP and AAC. All you need to do is use the yellow upload button in the upper right hand corner. You could upload from your hard disk, laptop or cell phone.

-Arranging Videos-

Videos you like could be quick listed or could be arranged to create play lists. You could also favorite videos you like to easier find them.

-Embedding-

You could embed videos using their code and this could be embedded in your blog or on your social networking page such as in Friendster and My Space page.

-Subscribing-

In case that you like a particular channel's content you can subscribe to it so as to find it easily the next time.

-Sending Messages-

You could send messages to fellow account holders at You Tube. You could even attach a video to that message.

-Commenting-

You could make a comment on the video if it was good or not or if you have questions about it you can post a comment to ask the uploader of the video. Sadly there are many comments here which do not make sense, are repulsive or are just hateful.

-Flagging-

Videos could be flagged for potentially offensive content such as having too much violence, being disrespectful towards race and religion or are pornographic in nature.

What are the channels I am subscribed to?

Dr. Smoov - This cool channel contains edited videos of popular cartoons such as The Transformers and G.I. Joe. They are edited is such a way that they appear to be amusing. The channel is not for kids though as it contains a lot of profanity and cursing. My favorite videos there are the following:

SOS Wheeljack - This video is about Wheeljack creating the Dinobots. Optimus Prime however, chastises him for creating the Dinobots with small brains.

The Rude Awakening of Optimus Prime - This is an edited version of the episode "The Return of Optimus Prime." Here Optimus verbally scathes Rodimus Prime for running the Autobots into the ground. He also disses Kup and Wheelie.

Shockwave's Burden - Shockwave is guarding Cybertron but is taunted by a bunch of female Autobots.

Wheeljack vs Cereal Commercial - Take 3 UNCENSORED - HQ - This shows Optimus Prime and Wheeljack advertising a fictitious breakfast cereal called Energon-O's

TNA Wrestling - This is the 1775 videos as of this writing. This channel contains clips of TNA Impact, a segment about getting to know your favorite superstars called TNA Webography, a talk show called the Spincycle and segments for ShopTNA hosted by Don West, a veteran of home television shopping. My favorite videos there are the following:

TNA Webography: Velvet Sky - Velvet Sky is my favorite TNA Knockout. This lets fans get to know her more than just her in ring persona.

TNA Webography: AJ Styles - AJ Styles is the future of TNA. I appreciate this segment as I get to know the man behind the wrestler.

TNA: The Main Event Mafia Declare War - Scott Steiner returns to TNA after he successfully completes his knee rehabilitation and completely trashes the Front Line in an incredible promo. Scott Steiner is candid and explosive here.

TNA: Sting And AJ Styles Get Into A Brawl - Sting does an incredible post Bound for Glory promo. He gets involved with an argument with AJ Styles which ends in a fist fight.

Spin Cycle: JB with Russo, Taylor, Kenney and Gilberti - This is an incredibly fun edition of the Spin Cycle where the three other guests trash "The Disco Inferno" Glenn Gilberti. Sadly, Glenn Gilberti and Pat Kenney have since been released due to budgetary constraints.

TNA: Sting Speaks On The Legends - Sting has a fantastic promo and integrates legends such as Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Dusty Rhodes and Hulk Hogan. He blames Samoa Joe for being disrespectful towards tradition and towards people who paved the way for him.

TNA: Sting Finally Speaks Out On His Actions - Sting speaks on why he had to interfere with Samoa Joe's match with Booker T and AJ Styles' match with Kurt Angle because they crossed the line to the point of disrespecting accomplished wrestlers.

Maxsports - Maxsports has a show called the Pro Wrestling Report on ESPN radio. It is a show about wrestling. My favorite videos there are the following:

Kevin Nash Interview - Pro Wrestling Report on ESPN - This is an interview with TNA superstar Kevin Nash. He talks about how he started in the business and about his tenure in TNA.

Pro Wrestling Report TV - January 14, 2009 - This is a nice edition of PWR as they discuss their opinions on the Top Ten Best Wrestling Themes of All Time. I totally agree on some of their selections such as the New World Order theme, the Wolfpac theme and the Ultimate Warrior theme.

Tonyahaburgess - This is the channel of Tony Burgess. He is a British motivational speaker who uses mindset changes to make people realize their potential. He founded the Academy of High Achievers. My favorite video is"

Belief Change Process Parts 1-6 - This shows how a paradigm shift can lead you to better results and higher achievement.

The Verdict

You Tube has been one of the most used websites in the Internet. Through it, the sharing and viewing of videos has never been as easy. You Tube has transcended anything the major networks or producers have ever done in terms of video accessibility.

The biggest problem on You Tube however is copyright infringement. Although this may be good for consumers in the short terms as they get to watch shows and movies for free, it hurts them in the long term because films makers and producers will generate less revenue and have less incentive to produce better shows, movies and music for the public. In the end, the public loses out because of lesser quality and quantity.

I also have a problem with inappropriately labeled reviews. Sometimes some people who are not in their right frame of mind create reviews which have titles which are far different from the actual content. Some of them function as some sort of practical joke.
I also do not approve of You Tube's lack of proactivity in screening videos. They rely too much on people flagging reviews to do something about them. With the money You Tube makes, they should hire more people and develop better programs to stop these videos from being uploaded in the first place.

On the bright side, You Tube enables ordinary people like you and me to share videos to friends and family and to the entire world. At times, this can be rewarding as you gain instant fame. This could translate to money down the line.

On the corporate side, You Tube enables companies to advertise through ads or through placing content on their own channel. This offers companies a cost-efficient way to do business. With You Tube's site traffic, it is worth it.

You Tube has created a new medium of distributing videos. It has its pros and cons. It has helped facilitate the transfer of information in this information age.
