You Tube University [Must Read for Educational Resources]

An in Depth Guide to Educational Resources on You Tube

Nancy Austin
You Tube is stocked full of educational resources for students of all ages. Here are my favorites.

Have Fun Teaching teaches in sing-song style with harmonies about days of the week, nouns,
subject and predicates. Little ones also learn counting by 2's, 3's and basic counting. "If you multiply length times width times height get the volume of a figure right." They even have a song about learning respect. The Have Fun Teaching Channel is very cutting edge and the lyrics stay on topic with each explanation in clear, easy to understand language. "The subject of a sentence tells who or what it's about." This is an excellent teaching tool. These videos are idea when used along with worksheets as a learning supplement.

Visit Sesame Street and The Electric Company also on you tube as they have their own channels.

MultiplicationTable sets the multiplication facts to rap and it's what the kids might call cool while parents or teachers just see it as way to get the times tables into their heads. You might play these songs while kids draw or color as each song is pretty repetitive with each table getting one long rap devoted to it. If you've been studying the times tables on paper or with flash cards you could take a break one day and just play these songs or use them as a way to introduce the times tables to your children. As the song says you must find strength.

For older students EHow on You Tube offers videos on improving writing skills including research tips. This channel offers a large variety of tutorials for school, work and everyday living. StudyBeat.com comes across as a comprehensive channel for high school and college bound students. Topics include Trigonometry, Algebra, Physics, Science of Nutrition, Sociology,

Psychology, advice on putting together a resume, SAT preparation and other academic as well
as practical subjects.

You tube is literally packed with science related videos. It all depends upon which branch of science your child wants to study. Sky This Week, Basline Scientifics Channel, The Star Watching Rock , Obsession Telescopes and AstroStart all provide visual astronomy.Take a comfortable look into the cosmos with vibrant images from space. Science On Line is an informational channel about everything from paper wasps and yellow jackets to levers and jacks.

Enjoy Sid the Science Kid and Dragonfly T.V. for real kids doing real science as they say on the show. Check them out at PBS on you tube. Watch and listen to TMW Media's Understanding Gravity. Entertain and enlighten with E-How's Animal Habitat series. National Geographic have their own channel with a shark attack survival guide, ancient wonders of the pyramids, a tour of Egypt and much more. National Wildlife Federation posts a multitude of environmental, educational videos on their channel. Find out how plants use water at the Exposure Foundation. Investigate the private life of plants, the biggest flower on earth and the Venus Flytrap on BBC Worldwide.

Psychetruth delivers Nutrition By Natalie, an archive of in depth scientifically proven
nutrition. From coconut and other raw foods to junk food Natalie leaves nothing off her list of
foods to evaluate as far as nutritional value or lack there of in many cases.Natalie really
is the food police, but she knows her facts and stays on track. This is a great way to teach
children the truth about the quality and performance of everyday foods.

Strictly experimental, research the experiments you would like your child to try and set a table
up with the needed supplies. Your child can follow along with the video instructions and pause or
play back when needed. Newton said an object will stay at rest until a force acts upon it.Get busy
experimenting with all sorts of objects from paper clips to rice, liquids, goo and whatever you want to do. Steve Spangler Science has videos on the table cloth trick, a new spin on the classic egg drop, screaming balloons, cornstarch goo and so on. Curious yet? Try out Expert Village's Flubber. The ever famous ocean in a bottle and jumping moth balls are also worth a try. Figure out how to float a paper clip in water. Play sharks with pepper and H20. Build a volcano. Study physics with rice stuffed just right in a plastic bottle. Balance by holding in the air with a pop cycle stick. The possibilities are out there. Find them for the sake of experimentation. Learn about Sir Isac Newton's Laws of Motion and Gravity. It's all on You Tube.

Don't forget to stop by the Socoolsceince channel which is packed with experiments and other
scientific information such as how to detect acid rain.

As you're setting up the lab pretend you are their assistant as they're pretending to be famous world renowned chemists. Once your little scientist has completed the experiments print out and present a science achievement award. www.hooverwebdesign.com This is just one way to make learning from videos a real life experience.

Parents may benefit from a video titled, "Getting Kids Hooked on Science". An acedemic panel
discusses this topic for anyone who's interested in learning the secrets. I'll give you a clue. It's really ABOUT HANDS ON SCIENCE. Videos are smart teaching tools while one method on it' s own likely isn't enough for today's curious student. Perhaps your child watches a video on gardening and decides to give it a try or maybe the astronomy videos will lead to telescopes and the night sky in your back yard. Never doubt that what begins in your computer room can wind up leading to adventures in the outside world. There we have one of the benefits from technology. When it's used carefully the possibilities are endless. You can also provide books about great scientists you learn about in documentaries. Remember, the book is always better than the movie, but both give interesting perspectives as well.

Moving right along to history, You Tube is a handy resource especially for stock piled resources
in teaching history to elementary school aged children. Search for videos by Discovery Education. These are animated accounts of history including George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Bejamin Franklin, Helen Keller, Galileo and Florence Nightingale. Liberty's Kids is similar to Discovery Education with animated movies about history including, The Boston Tea Party and many more. Combine the wisdom of books and the knowledge of educational videos. Childhood of Famous Americans offers a book about Thomas Edison's childhood. Discovery Education also has a video about Edison. Make this fun by popping popcorn before the video or handing out coloring sheets of Abraham Lincoln during a movie about his presidency. Still want more history? The Biography Channel offers informative videos on Nelson Mandela, Amelia Earhart, Barack Obama, Princess Diane,Oprah and more. Yet, another approach involves watching a video about a historical place such as the Alamo and then treating the kids with a surprise visit to San Antonia to learn Texas history up close. TNhistory for Kids with History Bill proudly takes us back in time to reenactments from Tennessee history. Videos include Happy Times at Fort Loudoum, Trek Across Tennessee and others. He even visits with the governor to tell the youngsters about government and how it works. I really enjoy History Bill. When you're trying to use a suttle approach to getting your point across about the beauty and importance of studying history, ask Andy Griffith. In Andy Discovers America, Andy finds himself accidentally misrepresenting history as unimportant in front of his son so Opy takes a wiseguy comment out of context when Andy is trying to comfort his son who doesn't understand or enjoy his history homework. The teacher isn't happy when she finds out the sheriff might be telling the boys in her class not to concern themselves too much with history. Andy then takes it upon himself to find a really good story from Opy's history book and tells it to the boys in a way that inspires them to start a Mayberry history club and the only way to get in is to remember the historical dates from the history book. You can watch this episode on You Tube for a little inspiration of your own.

Yakko's World is a wonderful way to begin learning. Yakko's World with Flags, Yakko's World with states and Yakko's Nations of the World in 2 minutes. Yakko can sing really fast and it's fun for the whole family even on a Saturday night. " Equador, Chili, Brazil." Sometimes you can play it for your own amusement and this will send a good impression to your children, but adults may think you're wacko. Try Yakko's Universe too. "We're just tiny little specs about the size of Mickey Rooney, it's a big universe." To answer the question what is Yakko, we're not sure. He never slows down long enough for us to get a good look at him. He's jumping up and down in front of a map or flying through space happily singing. He also supposedly sings all the words in the English language. "Well, there it is, Wacko Warner is well underway to singing all the words in the English language." He shows a picture of Bugs Bunny for lunatic .

For current and recent events within your child's lifetime introduce children to the news. AP Associated Press have their own channel. Today in History [Feb.11] with stories about Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, Charles Darwin and the death of Charles Schultz. Other titles include though aren't limited to Eighteen Days That Shook the Middle East, Obama Heralds Egypt's Move Toward Democracy and Actress Elizabeth Taylor Hospitalized. You can also watch Barack Obama Sworn in as 44th President if you're feeling nostalgic already or your children were too young to remember this historic event when it happened. Feel free to decide which stories are appropriate for your child's age. Follow with a discussion.

For social studies here are some ideas. New York, a Brief History of Skyscrapers and a Brief History of the New York City Council. The Statue of Liberty is popular on You Tube. Check out New York City's Statue of Liberty-2 minute tour. Try longer or shorter videos depending on your child's attention span and interest in a particular subject. Watch an Interactive Social Studies Lesson on Maranda. You may enjoy A Brief History of Unions and older children may see this as an introduction to the concept of unions. Just type it in on you tube.

For geography, Valery Designs offers a Seven Continents Song. Geography Tutor shares map and globe terms and tells about earth's physical features. Play these videos in addition to coloring and labeling maps or along with other methods you may be using such as geography puzzles or text books and an atlas.

This guide to educational resources on You Tube was an adventure to research and compile. I've included some of my favorites as well as programs I'd never watched until yesterday. I feel thoroughly educated! Enjoy!
