All these items are stored in your closet or attic so if you want to get started, naturally you have to get in there and sort these out and then decide which of these items you want to part with.
When all these items have been collected, examine each one carefully because some people make the mistake of putting a price on an item without realizing how much it is really worth.
A pretty good example are toys which were very cheap way back in the 1980's. If you have action figures like GI JOE, Transformers or Star Wars, they are worth a lot of money especially if these happen to be in mint condition.
The same goes for books, paintings and a host of other things so do some research by going online, the pawnshop and asking authority figures.
Enlisting the help of an appraiser will also be a good idea since they have no stake or interest in the items you are selling so you know that they will be honest with their findings.
There are two ways to help you turn old junk into cash. First, you can organize a garage sale. To ensure that this event will be a success, post ads around the neighborhood so people will know when and where this will be taking place.
Second, you can put these items up for auction. You have probably heard of Ebay and made a bid for one of these items before. Well now, this is your chance to become a seller rather than a buyer.
When you post an item, make sure to take a picture and be as descriptive as possible. Don't forget to put a minimum bid and a price that you are willing to sell it. Post your items in more than one auction site to be able to reach a vast market.

Most of the time, you will still have a few items left after organizing a garage sale and posting in an auction. What do you do with the rest? Well, it won't be a bad idea to donate the rest to a charitable institution. Remember, you have already made a significant amount of money so be happy with that and be happy that you are helping others without anything in return.
