You Will Fly Away

A Poem for My Daughter

Alissa Dorough
You started out,
A little baby caterpillar,
Clinging to me as if
I were a branch and you
Were holding on for dear life
As the wind -
The crazy world around you -
Threatened to rip us apart.
As you began to find your place,
To gain your footing in a
Fast-paced life,
You began to let go of me.
In return, I had to let go of you.
And now each day you grow -
A little bigger,
A little stronger,
A little more independent.
And I know that one day
You will come out of your cocoon,
A beautiful butterfly.
You will spread your wings,
You will brace yourself
Against the wind once more,
And you will fly away,
Never stopping to look back
At the life you leave behind.
