Young Mexican Police Chief Heroically Flees Mexico After Receiving Death Threats from Mexican Drug Cartel

21-year-old Marisol Valles has been fired for not showing up at her job as chief of police of the Mexican border town of Praxedis Guadalupe Guerrero in Chihuahua State, according to Yahoo News. She has reportedly fled the country to seek asylum in the United States of America. Seeking asylum in the United States could be seen as a political move or could be seen as a young woman seeking refuge from a future death.

We know young Valles to be a hero to her fellow countryman. She was born and raised in Mexico. She decided to take on the police chief position after no one else applied for the daunting job.

This young woman has the guts of heroes and the spine of someone much older and wiser. Heroism comes in many different shapes, but for this young girl, she found herself facing drug cartels head-on: more importantly, the Mexican cartel.

Before she took office, the history of police chiefs did not appear optimistic. 28-year-old Érika Gándara has been missing in Bravos since she was taken from her home by armed men. After Hermila García was appointed police chief of Meoqui, he didn't last a month before being killed.

The moral of this unfortunate story about Mexico is that there aren't high hopes for survival when taking on the Mexican Drug Cartel. For the lone heroes who have attempted to take on these killers, death has been the unfortunate outcome.

Reportedly, because Marisol Valles received death threats, she has attempted to flee into the United States. Whether the U.S. will give her asylum from a country that refused to support and protect their own has yet to be seen. Although she may have found a short term refuge, she will have much to prove to be able to stay in the land of the free, home of the brave.

Unfortunately, it is never as simple as Valles wanting to come to the U.S. -- and snap her fingers -- she can stay. In order to remain in the U.S., she will have to prove that the persecution she has experienced due to persecution stems from her race, religion, nationality, political views or membership in a particular social group.

With as many illegal immigrants as we have in our country, one would assume seeking asylum for a heroic girl would be a cake in a park. Unfortunately, she will have to go through the system to be able to stay. Will politics play a part? We can only wait and see. What is for certain is that Mexico's bravest woman will fight to stay in the United States.
