Young Obama Voters Under 40 - Did You Know? Part 2

Of Associations and Accusations

Sheryl Young
This is a continuation of a 2-Part Series opinion editorial based on political facts (see Part 1 here).

Every time a Republican tries to say anything about Barack Obama that doesn't cast a positive light, they are painted as mean-spirited and negative. But I understand it's OK for liberals to be calling John McCain and Sarah Palin every name in the book. There have been derogatory remarks about Palin's genitalia in the AC limerick contest, when the limericks could have been just good fun. And there was an article about President Bush being something like a lump of vomit, and other colorful expletives. So I'm taking my shot at the double standard.

Young Obama voters, you are being asked to forget about the many shady past associations of your candidate. But you are being told to remember every little action of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Can you not see this disparity?

I already gave one example in Part I about Obama's family association with Communist Frank Davis which was about 30 years ago - you're supposed to forget that but remember that George Bush drank too much in his 20's (40 years ago). Here are some more:

Obama and William Ayers were on the same committee from 1999 to 2002 for the Woods Fund Organization. You are supposed to forget about Obama's association with this once Most Wanted American terrorist that ended a mere 6 years ago. But you are supposed to remember John McCain's association with Charles Keating which ended in 1989 - nearly 20 years ago.

Charles Keating committed a white collar crime - he was involved in a savings and loan scandal. Yes, that's bad. But Senators John McCain and John Glenn were cleared of all charges and told to be more careful in who they dealt with. This is a far cry from the Bill Ayres situation.

Has Ayers denounced his 1970's activities? NO. Ayers was interviewed after 9/11/01 and said he has never been sorry for the bombing he did while with the group The Weather Undergound (which he co-founded) and stated he wishes he had done more of the same.

What if Ayres had bombed an abortion clinic in the 1970's? Would conservatives be allowed to forget it? What if his family had slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation? Would conservatives be allowed to forget it?

What was the Weather Underground?

The WU sprang out of a group of college students frustrated with our government. According to the FBI, the organization described itself as a revolutionary organization of communist men and women. William Ayers' group, The Weather Underground, terrorized American in the 1970's. Ayers' wife, Bernadine Dohrn, was once on the FBI's Most Wanted List. They have been on the same speaking ticket as Obama.

The Weather Underground - which still exists by the way - was at that time considered the most serious American terrorist group. They protested U.S. policies by bombing the Pentagon, U.S. Capitol and other government buildings. To most of America's horror, the main case against the Weather Underground was dismissed due to a supposed FBI improper surveillance scandal.

I'm not saying Obama is a terrorist or guilty by association - of course not. But he has certainly got a number of people with whom he now has to deny being associated. And a politician can't always be held responsible for the people who endorse his/her campaign, but why would he not think ahead to his political aspirations and stay away from working alongside someone with a background such as Ayers within this decade?

The difference between the Reverend Wright/Pastor Hagee association:

Wright was Obama's church pastor for 20 years. John Hagee wasn't ever McCain's pastor. The Obamas were married by Reverend Wright. Obama named a book after one of Wright's sermons. So apparently, it is just total coincidence that Obama missed every one of Wright's Black Liberation Theology sermons.

Have you ever gone to a church for even 5 years? If you have, then you should know where the pastor generally stands within a matter of months. If not, you're "following a religious person blindly" - something we conservative Christians are often accused of.

A different subject - Stem Cell Research:

You have been told that President Bush (that means John McCain too, because apparently McCain is just a clone) and most conservatives and Christians, has been against stem cell research. That's a lie. They are against embryonic stem cell research. The kind using human baby embryos. There are other types of stem cell research - human brain cell, umbilical cord cell, and the sick person's own stem cells - that have already shown more results than embryonic research.

For example, in 2004, a South Korean woman, paralyzed for 20 years, walked out of her wheelchair after treatment with adult stem cells derived from umbilical-cord blood. The mother and child of the umbilical cord were unharmed.

But for some reason, your party is bent on destroying human embryos and won't let this other information get out. They are also bent on simply telling people that Republicans are "against stem cell research" without making the distinction. The more we allow embryonic stem cell research, the more we run the risk of "mad scientists" harvesting live baby embryos specifically to be killed for this purpose. There is already evidence of the selling of baby parts from aborted fetuses.

Republicans are always being asked to get our facts straight and search for the truth. Can we not ask you to do the same?

This concludes my series for Young Obama voters. If I get just one of you to think about this stuff - really think about it - it's worth whatever hate mail I get.

I love how you assert that democrats want to kill babies. I also love how you ignore the possibility that embryonic stem cell research does not "show much results" because of the fact that people like you have made it illegal, ignoring the scientific progress you have impeded by imposing your personal values on others and effectively demonstrating your mastery of circular logic. Good work presenting the facts. Maybe for your next article you can mention the fact that Obama's middle name is Hussein. Spooky, huh? Sure makes for some nice "analysis".

thanks again to everyone for your comments. Derek - I didn't omit particulars on the Woods Fund for any purpose except keeping my article from running over 4 pages. I addressed the fact that, altho' Ayers did the bombings when Obama was a boy, in 2001 Ayers said that he STILL wasn't sorry for the bombings he did, and here is Obama working with him in 2002, knowing of this. He and his group were not convicted because of a stupid FBI flub on privacy rights when gathering evidence. Can people change? Yes, but why is he still not sorry almost 30 years later? Re: Falwell, Robinson - These men have made stupid remarks based on generalizations that are unfair and I do not agree with them just because I'm a "conservative". Why even bring them into my article? Ayres, Wright and Hagee are only mentioned for their direct associations with our candidates during this campaign. It has nothing to do with other pastors.

[continued] Wright just as a Republicans, members of a party that has never won without the majority of southern religious voters supporting them, needs Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. Your comments about stem cells are also extremely disturbing. To imply that Democrats would rather kill a fetus than not given the choice is just ridiculous.

[continued] was in an anti-Vietnam radical organization and has never been convicted of a violent crime doesn't bother members of the business community in Chicago or the recruiting personnel at the University of Illinois then it does not bother me. I wouldn't debate that Obama loved Reverend Wright; he initially stated the closeness of their relationship in public statements saying that he would not denounce the pastor. However, anyone familiar with Chicago knows that the Trinity church is a staple of the black community and it's hardly surprising that a black politician would maintain membership therein. Let's not be naive, Mrs. Young, this is politics. In addition, I find the statements of Jerry Falwell regarding homosexuals causing the September 11th, 2001 tragedy to be far more disgusting than anything Rev. Wright has ever said in his sermons and, at least in recent years, McCain had supported him whole-heartedly. Again, it's just politics. A Chicago politician needs Reverend Wrig

As a 23 year old who worked as a precinct captain for Obama I must say that your impression of young voters is just slightly off target. Also, while you didn't actually lie in your article, you did manage to omit some key information. For instance, the committee that Barack Obama was on with John Ayers was the Woods Fund of Chicago which has stated as its goal "to increase opportunities for less-advantaged people and communities in the Chicago metropolitan area" and they take part in urban neighborhood development and education initiatives for impoverished Chicago youths. It should also be noted that the Ayers bombings occurred when Obama was just 8 years old and that Ayers is now a well respected professor of education at the University of Illionois-Chicago. It is also worth noting that other members of the same committee included several respected business and education leaders in Chicago and I have read that at least a few of these are known to be conservatives. If the fact that Aye

Actually, I don't sanction crime whatever the party affiliation and a lot of people are that way. Spinning still spins some people's heads, though.

  • Kofi Bofah11/12/2008

I am 28, and feel that Obama will be held accountable in a similar vein to all Presidents.

This is article is awesome. This article proves many things. It really proves just how ignorant the typical American voter really is. This election came down to quality versus quantity. Quality being John McCain and years of experience he has had with foreign policy, the 1700 bills he has sponsored and his commitment to the average american person. Quantity being Barack Obama and how many different things he thinks needs to be fixed. How many different promises he has made that will not pan out because he does not have full control, and he only supported 128 bill during his short stint in the Senate, Quality versus Quantity. If just 2 out of every 4 people would have taken the time to read their actual voting record this entire race would have had a totally different outcome. Everything that the senators do is public record through the Library of Congress and each American needs to know that before blindly voting for a President!

Great article! I think the comments on this article are very insightful and that's what great writing is all about! You got the people talking! I can't wait to see what will happen after this election.

  • Julia Bodeeb11/2/2008

What young voters under 40 know is that McCain is a war monger who will start wars and start a draft. Anyone of draft age will vote against McCain for that reason alone....and many others.
