Your Baby's Due Date: Reasons Why a Holiday Birthday is a Good Thing

Lisa Ross
I was born on the fifth of July, so I wasn't born on a holiday. But I still have a "holiday birthday", and I love it. In fact, I can't imagine having my birthday on just any old day. My mother was really hoping I wouldn't be born on the 4th of July, but if I had been that would be even better. Parents, if your child's due date is on or near a holiday, it's a good thing. Here are reasons why.

There's always a party if not on my birthday, on the eve of it. Most people aren't working, so they're available to get together. The mood is festive and people gather for fun and good food.

So rather than the holiday diminishing my birthday, it makes what would be "just a birthday" ten times better. Whereas a normal birthday might include just candles on a cake, mine includes fireworks exploding in the sky. Those lucky people with December birthdays get the whole town lit up for them. If your birthday falls on Easter a rabbit will put candy randomly throughout your house!

With my holiday birthday, whether it falls on a Sunday or a Tuesday, things stop for a little while for people to get together and party.

With my birthday being the day after the holiday, it's like my birthday starts early and lasts for two days rather than just one. If it were four days later, it would be like a week-long celebration.

Sure, any other birth date can turn into a big deal, but mine is an automatic celebration - a good time is guaranteed. And parents, since your child's birthday is near the holiday it's easy to celebrate - you are already making arrangements to serve food and have guests, anyway.

I understand how those with late December birthdays might feel that in terms of gift-giving they are short-changed. For younger children, the right gift can make it all worth it. Parents usually know what this "right gift" is. I'm not saying, however, that you have to buy them a pony (it never worked for me).

Birthdays are really about getting together with people and eating good food. Nothing delivers that opportunity like the December holiday season. And some repetitive hint-dropping (children are good at this) can ensure that the birthday/Christmas combo gift is worth having had all their gifts rolled into one.

A holiday birthday is what you make of it. I love mine, and wouldn't want it any other way.

Like the author my birthday is also July 5th, and I love it! Fireworks every year to celebrate, a guaranteed celebration with family & friends...can't be beat. Plus this year I had my 3rd son the day after my birthday...so now I get to share in the celebration with him! My other two sons were also born the week of holidays- Memorial Day and Halloween. I wouldn't have it any other way!

Depends on the holiday. I'm a near-Christmas baby. As Heather pointed out, one gift counts for both, but worse, your birthday is competing with holiday parties and people going out of town.

The only problem is if you're born near a gift-giving holiday; then people give you one gift thats supposed to be for birthday and that holiday, and it's a rip off!!! lol.

Both of my kids are Thanksgiving babies (now grown). That goes with having my brother and one of my sisters having birthdays closeby. I have never asked them how they felt. I hope they are as happy as you are about their birthdays. We do have big, wonderful, feasting, festive family get togethers. I like your point of view.
