Your Camping Style: Are You the Survivor or Supermodel Type?

Angela Kimball
Camping is one activity enjoyed by many. You may have memories of camping from childhood. Going camping is a familiar trip for the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Possibly, you recollect a trip from yesteryear with your parents to the deep woods. If the thought of an upcoming camping trip is appealing to you, then read on.

In this high-tech society, taking a trip to the deep woods may be just the right thing for you. If you travel far enough, even your cell phone will be on a vacation. But, before you schedule the trip, learn something about your camping style. What kind of a camper are you? Do you prefer to rough it with bare essentials like a contestant from the popular TV show "Survivor"? Maybe you like brushing up on your nature skills, but are more like the Hollywood model type.

Take this quiz to help define your camping style. Keep track of your answers A, B, or C.

Scenario Number One:

You and your honey have decided to take a romantic weekend together. Your partner says that getting in touch with nature would be good for the both of you. Your ideal vacation spot is:

A. floating down the Mississippi River on a cozy wooden raft built for two.

B. a weekend at the spa enjoying a natural body wrap and hot rock treatment.

C. visit the Smoky Mountains and enjoy a stay in a fabulous log cabin out in the woods.

Scenario Two:

Your son or daughter just came home with an invitation to a Father/Son or Mother/Daughter campout. Your initial thought is:

A. Cool. I can teach him or her how to fish, start a fire, and pitch a tent.

B. Oh my gosh! There will be no Starbucks around for miles!

C. This sounds fun, but flushable toilets would be nice.

Scenario Three:

When packing your bags your essentials are:

A. jerky, water, and flint.

B. battery operated curling iron and mousse.

C. Warm sleeping bag, wieners, and the makings for s'mores.

Scenario Four:

During your campout you will dine on:

A. only what you personally gather or catch.

B. whatever is on the menu of the caterer.

C. popcorn, trail mix, and definitely some baked beans.

If your answers were primarily A's, you should put your name In the hat for a reality TV show. You are ready to get back to the basics and enjoy the simpler life. One drawback is that travel companions may want to vote you off the campsite.

For those of you who scored answer B for the majority of the questions, you may want to forego the camping and consider redecorating your home with a woodsy or jungle motif. This is probably about as close to nature as you would like to get. A plus for you is that when you do go camping, you will undoubtedly be the stylish camper around the campfire.

Answers that were mostly C are a happy camper. When it comes to camping you are in luck. You prefer the amenities of a bathroom or shower, but won't spend six hours planning your outfit and styling your hairdo. You wouldn't expect to hunt down a wild boar for dinner, but fishing for fun and feast is optional.

Now that you know your camping style, grab your marshmallows and practice your ghost stories for around the fire.

  • If you bring a curling iron camping, you probably aren't the primitive type.
  • Rubbing sticks and flint to make a fire is undoubtedly the roughing it type of camper.
  • Your destination and contents of luggage, say a lot about your camping style.
