Your Fall Season Home to Do List

The Fall season has arrived and Winter is right around the corner. It is time to get your house in order for the coming blast of winter weather. This article will give you some tips on how to do just that.

Holiday Preparations; If you decorate outside, now is the time to get up those lights and double check the wiring to make sure it is safe. Make the job easier for yourself.

Clean Gutters; Don't wait till the last leaf falls down. Clean out your gutters and make sure that the water runs easily through them.

Block the Leaks; Anything that lets in cold air needs to be blocked. An incense stick inside your house will allow you to find the drafts that are entering your home.

Check your Insulation; You need at least 11 to 12 inches of attic insulation. Cracked double pane windows need to be repaired.

Filter Change; Replace your furnace and air duct filters with new filters. While you are at it, turn on your furnace and make sure that it is working properly.

Chimney Sweeps; If they need cleaned, get it done. At least take the time to check them. Many house fires begin from clogged chimneys.

Shovels and Salt; Locate those snow shovels and walk cleaner. Secure them in a ready to use area.

Prep the Windows; Take down the screens and close the storm windows. Use some caulking compound to seal around the storm window frames.

Air Ducts; Double check your air ducts for heat flow. Remove items that cover them. A lot of energy can be wasted by open or closed air ducts.

Fans; If you use ceiling fans, reverse them. This will push warm air downward.

Pipes; Double check your pipes and water lines. You might have to add extra insulation to them.

Alarms; Check those smoke detectors and alarms. You need to replace batteries. You might have to add carbon monoxide detectors.

Snow Removal; If you have someone that removes it from your walk or driveway, touch bases with them now. Do not wit till the first snow fall.

Finally; Add extra food supplies and winter items. Batteries for radios, generators, candles, extra lighting, can goods, dry goods are some of the items to consider.
