The first thing that you should do is write up policies and procedures for yourself. When you are creating a work-at-home environment for yourself policies and procedures are mandatory for your success. You have probably followed policies and procedures in the outside work force. This may be even why you are considering working for yourself. It is important that you understand, policies and procedures are created by trial and error in order to ensure that a business runs efficiently as possible. When you create your own work-at-home environment, it is vital that you incorporate some policies and procedures for yourself.
Creating policies and procedures for your work-at-home environment can be difficult, but it is necessary. If you do not set some rules right in the beginning, you may find yourself hitting many challenges later on down the road. One of the first rules that you need to set
is a time frame in which you are prepared to work. It doesn't matter what time you want to start, it could be 7 am or 2 pm, setting a start time is critical. You also have to decide how many hours each day you want to work. This will allow you to create a start and finish time for each workday. If you want to start work at 8 am, and work until 12 noon, you should make sure that all of your work can be handles during that time period. If it cannot, adjust your work hours. Or you may have the type of business that you can leave it until the next workday.
The next thing to consider for your work at home environment is to learn to walk away from your work at the designated time you have chosen to end your day. If you have children this is important. I'm sure you have heard people tell you that they want to work at home so they can spend more time with their children. As it turns out, they end up spending more time working in there home than they did working outside the home. You have to learn to leave your work and take time off for your family and most important, time for yourself. Do not allow yourself any overtime unless it is absolutely necessary.
It's so important to have your set time to end your day. Get up and walk away as if you are leaving your office for your car.
The next thing is to decide what days off you will have. Many people typically set the weekends as there days they want off. Other people chose weekdays off so they can take care of any other business they may have. If doesn't matter how many hours you work each day, make sure you take at least one to two days off. You need this to maintain your mental and physical health. You also need this to spend with family and friends. Becoming a workaholic won't do you or your family any good.
Once you have established your workdays, start time, and ending time, now you have to inform your family and friends. You have to let them know that just because you have a work-at-home business and have a little more flexibility than the outside job you were doing, doesn't mean they can impose on you anytime of the day. It's important that they respect the times and days you have set for your work-at-home business. Your family and friends have to treat your home job just like when you were working outside the home. Family and friends supporting you with your decision to have a work-at-home business will make your transition a lot smoother in creating a work-at-home environment.
You can find lots of articles on the internet that cover the basic needs in creating a work-at-home business environment but if you don't set these three very important basic rules first and foremost, then you will become discouraged and end up quitting. Time management is your key. It can be your friend or your enemy.
