Your First Day of College

How to Prepare Yourself or Someone Else

Ken Lyons
College can be a crazy experience, and obviously with the craziness comes the rush of having to prepare for the first day. You've packed everything from home and brought to a completely different home away from home, your clothing, supplies, and food for daily living, not to mention a new pair of unmentionables for each day (a little joke there).

Now, the first day is just 24 hours away...and you have no idea what to do for the next day of class. Maybe I sound like a nerd to you (which I am....truly), the first day of class is most essential and important, especially in College. So, if your nervous about the first day, what must you do?

Simple...just take the following steps:

1. Make sure that you have all of your school supplies; Pens, Pencils, Paper, Folders, etc. Anything of the sort that will help you. If your taking a math class, even if your first full day of classes doesn't consist of a math course, take the calculator anyways. When it comes to College, you are practically acting as a survivalist, a survivor of all sorts of elements. You'll never know whether you need to just in case, pull out a calculator or other types of supplies. ALSO, I would strongly suggest a "SCHEDULE BOOK." Schedule books are so important...I use mine on a daily basis and I would be lost without keeping up with my daily work and homework assignments. Update your schedule book everyday, and if you have a new assignment, or anything of the sort, make sure to note take it down into your schedule book. Notebooks can act as a schedule book as well, but you do have to remember to stay "ORGANIZED."

2. Have your books yet ???; Don't worry....I would strongly suggest waiting to buy your books until your professor(s) shell out their syllabus of the assignments and the details about the class. During such a time, the professor(s) will most likely give you a break down of whether or not they want you to purchase a book or not for the class. Once you have read the syllabus and figured out what book or books to purchase, go to the school book store as soon as possible and do your thing!! I would strongly recommend that you try to do such a task as early in the morning as you can, of course a little after the store immediately opens, this way you can beat the crowds. If your college is pretty good in size, and the population is about the size of a miniature New York City, you'll want to make haste and get your books and other supplies you think you may want or need as soon as possible. This is kinda a money and time saver for you and yours!

3. Set your body clock. if you do this days before, or even if you start a night before class starts, you'll be ready to avoid the potential for falling asleep in class during the middle of a long and boring afternoon. Also, you'll have plenty of days and nights of studying around the clock...but the last thing you'll want to do is stay up for hours playing video games or hanging on the day before the first day of classes....and if your first class of the morning is 8 AM in the morning or earlier and your attempting to stay up all night and sleep for a couple of hours, your asking for it!!

Out of all of those three steps, one important thing to do also is to RELAX!! Enjoy the fact that you are making it into your first day of college. Think of it as being the first day of the rest of your life...well, academically speaking.
