Your First Online Business

Are You Going to Succeed or Fail?

Ken Stephens
Why is it that 95% of all start-up home businesses fail? Yes, that is the hard, cruel fact. The overwhelming majority of online businesses fail within six months. Let's take a look at some of the most common reasons why this happens:

1) For the most part, people go into online businesses unprepared and lacking the knowledge to make their business venture successful. Most people think that starting an online business will require little work and no training. They are under the impression that money is easy to make on the Internet and that all they have to do is put up a website and the money will flow in. But in reality, Internet businesses require almost as much work as brick-and-mortar businesses require. The level of training and preparedness required to successfully launch an Internet business is, in reality, very high. And when faced with this shock, a lot of people simply give up.

2) Most people seem to choose the first flashy opportunity that they come across. They are taken in by all the hype and the hoopla of what is most certainly, nothing more than a sales pitch designed to separate them from their money. Of course, these sales pitches make a lot of money for the people selling the opportunity but very little money for the person buying the opportunity. Sadly, the Internet is filled with many scams, cheats, and get rich quick schemes.

3) A common mistake made by first-time online business owners is not focusing their efforts and sticking to a simple plan of action. They are overwhelmed by information overload and jump from strategy to strategy. Instead of settling for a proven, straightforward plan and having the patience and perseverance to wait for results, they move on. Thus, all their efforts are watered down and they never come to implement an effective money-making strategy, which sometimes takes a little time to bear fruit.

4) Unfortunately, people are generally lazy. If they are not required to work to make a living, pay bills and put food on the table, then they probably won't. More often than not, people who are starting their first online business already have a job. So they are not counting on the income from their online business to make ends meet. And as a result, their determination to succeed online may not be their uppermost priority. Determination and the drive to succeed are great factors in making an Internet business successful.

5) The desired to be independent can sometimes lead to a resistance in seeking out help. When a person reaches a point at which they are stuck and cannot seem to make progress with their business they can always find online resources that will provide a little jumpstart to get them going again. But this is often overlooked by first-time entrepreneurs. Online forums, chat rooms, and business network websites are full of experienced Internet marketers that are more than willing and happy to give assistance and lend experience when it is genuinely and sincerely asked for. Let's face it, nobody is an expert at every facet of Internet business. There is nothing wrong with asking for a little help.

Keep in mind these five points when you begin your first Internet business and you will have a greater chance of being in the 5% that have successful first time starts.
