Your First Sailboat

FGual
Do you feel a sense of joy when you see a sailboat cutting through the surf as it catches the wind to go near and far?, perhaps you should hold on to the thought of sailing and explore it further.

Make a visit to a local sailing club on days when they are hosting an open house, sailing lessons, or a race.
You can learn a lot just by watching how sailors prepare a boat to sail and launch off, and docking upon arrival.

Also very useful is finding sailboats for sale and letting the owner show you what every part is for, and how it all works.
Although most people think only of signing up for sailing lessons and then buying a boat, the reverse may make more sense in the long run.

Buying your very own boat and then hiring someone to teach you how to sail may be more economical, as you get to know your own boat right from the start. It's possible to hire someone to teach you the basics of sailing whenever is most convenient.

When buying your own sailboat make sure a trailer comes with it, preferably with the boat sitting on it so you can inspect the bottom. This saves you the time and expense of finding a trailer the right size.

An older small boat in good condition can be found inexpensively and used as a trainer for several months. If the boat suffers severe damage or is lost somehow, it will not be a big financial loss. If you are content to sail on a nearby lake or bay now and then, an older boat could provide many years of enjoyment at little cost.

If there is no driveway or backyard to store the boat at home, find a dry storage space Where the boat would be stored sitting on it's trailer. Joining a sailing or yacht club may be best as storage is probably included in their monthly dues, along with their nearby launch site. The next best thing is a storage yard from where the boat would be towed to a nearby launch ramp.

Joining the sailing crowd can be easier than you think, and could bring a wave of memorable experiences.
