Your Guide to a 10-10-2010 Wedding

Festive Ideas for Fall Weddings on This Special and Significant Day

Lauren Haslett
Sunday, the 10th of October, 2010 (10-10-10) will be a huge day for weddings around the world. Fall weddings are always beautiful and memorable, but are now more popular than ever before, and this special date makes the day even more desirable. The significance of this date isn't entirely clear, but many believe that something big, unexpected, or maybe just otherworldly will occur on this day. It is true that the chances of the day, month and year all lining up are rare - this happens only twelve times in a century! Even if you're not particularly superstitious, it's hard not to see this date as a day when the stars align, meant for a momentous occasion.

Take advantage of those beautiful fall colors.

Human beings have tried to control nature for centuries, and still we haven't learned to let nature take its course. When the fight is between people and the Mother Nature, we're always bound to lose. So instead of fighting it, choose colors that go with nature for your October wedding, especially if you're planning on any part of the ceremony or pictures taking place outdoors. Rich reds, oranges, golden yellows, browns and even deep purples are beautiful colors for your fall wedding palate. Incorporate these colors into everything from the bridesmaids' dresses and room décor to the wedding cake, favors and food.

Feast on festive fall food.

When we think fall food, many of us think of the festive holiday meals we enjoy with family and friends every season. Match the warm fall colors and lingering temperatures of this time of year with some warm fall flavors for a hit wedding feast.

A few fall menu ideas:

Use what's in season. Seasonal and local (i.e. sustainable and earth-friendly) eating is all the rage right now. To take advantage of this trend - and hearty fall flavors - plan a satisfying meal that showcases local fall produce. This will, of course, vary slightly depending on where you live, but many of the same seasonal foods are available in multiple regions around the country. Think gamey meats paired with pumpkin, brussels sprouts and colorful root vegetables like beets, rutabaga, turnips, carrots and sweet potatoes.

Spice it up. Don't stop at choosing seasonal ingredients. Take your fall feast theme all the way by giving flavor and aroma to your meal with classic fall spices, like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

Step away from the ordinary. You'll need equally spiced and savory beverages to go with your autumn menu. Think outside the box (and away from the ordinary champagne - too light for this hearty fare), and consider serving a mulled wine or spiced cider at your reception, in addition to the usual cocktails or cabernet.

Get a fashion forward feel - by going back in time?

No wedding trend is hotter right now than vintage wedding fashion. Brides from all regions and walks of life are finding it easy to get on board with classic style in a modern way. To best show off your vintage style and keep your choices from feeling costumey, plan a mostly modern wedding day ensemble, then add a few small vintage touches. Wedding planners, stylists and others in the business can't say enough about the old-fashioned hats and hairpieces making a big comeback now, and they are an easy and effortless way to look like a beautiful, classic, and yet trendy bride.
