Your Guide to Inexpensive Christmas Traditions

Angie M
Inexpensive Christmas traditions make for some of the best Christmas memories. While many families are often in search for a tradition to call their own, they often overlook the simple things that cost little or nothing. There are many Christmas tradition ideas that can last a lifetime that won't break the bank that the whole family will enjoy. Here are a few of my favorite, and cheap Christmas traditions that your family will carry on for years to come.

The most inexpensive Christmas traditions that we have involves decorating the tree and holding on to keepsakes. Our tradition is the placing of the family ornament on the tree. Every year, the youngest child gets to place this ornament on last. Of course, if you have many children you may have to find something similar for the older tots but this is very meaningful tradition. However, this does not have to be a family ornament you can choose almost any decoration with meaning behind it and do the same.

Another of the inexpensive Christmas traditions is picking out the family tree. If you are one of those individuals who pick out your own tree, make it a tradition. Every year my grandmother turned this into a big event. Instead of having someone else cut it down, visit a Christmas tree farm that will allow you to cut your own tree. Bring hot cocoa and the family, this is one of the best inexpensive Christmas traditions because not only are you spending time with your family, but saving money by cutting down your own tree. Costs will vary depending on where you get your Christmas tree.

Volunteer your time together as a family. Not only is this a cheap idea but one of those Christmas tradition ideas that give something back. Around the holidays participate in toy drives, coat drives, and work at the local soup kitchen for a couple of hours. This shows your children that they can make a difference and just how lucky they truly are. One of my favorite inexpensive Christmas traditions was always making rounds at the local nursing home. We would make cards and small gifts to those who had few or no visitors.

Christmas traditions do not have to cost anything, it is the meaning behind them. Instead of centering the tradition around your family, focus on the season of giving and the greater good. This will make memories that will last a lifetime while doing something good for mankind this holiday season.
