Your Helpful Guide on How to Make Friends and Expand Your Network

A wide network of friends and acquaintances can be very useful at times. It keeps you in contact with people that matter and can help you advance in your career.

The people in your network can be a source of news and information on job openings, events, and other information that is good both for your career and your lifestyle. They may know other people that might help you in certain matters, thus making introductions easier. They also can be party pals and gimmick mates that would make your social life more fun and exciting.

Expanding your network is not that difficult. You just have to always display a friendly aura and hit the right places where you could meet potential friends. Here are some helpful tips on how to make new friends and expand your network:

Start meeting people in your own school or workplace. It is a good place to start being friends with other people as they are already within your reach. If you are smiling, nodding, or greeting people just for the sake of recognizing them and not really knowing what their names are or what they do, then it's about time to change that attitude. Be friendlier. Be the one to strike a conversation the next time you and a coworker take the same elevator. Who knows, your new-found friend might be next head of your department.

If your schedule permits, join different clubs and organizations outside your school or work. It may be a socio-civic or interest and hobby clubs. People who join such clubs are more conditioned to meeting new people, thus easier to make friends with. Also, since club memberships are usually concentrated, you are more likely to find people there who have the same interests as you do.

Enlist in classes such as cooking, art, or piano class. The idea is to be around new people who have same interest as you. Because you like to do the same things, chances are, you have more things to talk about. Just being in the same class is already a conversational opener. Even the gym would allow you to meet new people, more than just making your body fit!

Accept party invitations. Parties and social gatherings are nice places where you could meet new friends and acquaintances. In large events, introductions to others may seem endless, but at least you'll get to know people from all walks of life. Remember to be friendly though. Initiate conversation and avoid staying in just one corner of the room.

Meet people online. The Internet has always been an effective media for making people meet. There are many available social network sites that not only keep you in touch with your friends from the past, but also let you meet new people whom you might be interested in.
