Your Life, Why You Should Make Better Food Choices to Mainain Your Health

Type 2 Diabetes is an Epidemic

R. Hill
Growing up in the Cabrini Green Chicago Housing Projects, I was never exposed to a healthy way of eating. Better yet no one around me was ever taught about healthy eating and the choices you make could affect you for life. The movie Food Inc was a very big eye opener for me, the movie explains my situation and I'm sure many others too.

I never heard of a movie about the way food was made and how food has transformed society in the past 50 years. This movie Food Inc is an eye opener and should be shown in every High School across American. Being a recipient of food stamps growing up, there was never a food chart on the refrigerator or a pamphlet that told you what should be purchased with the government assistance money. If you don't educate people about healthy eating for themselves and their children, then you will have what we have today a very physically sick society.

In one scene of the movie it showed a Hispanic family trying to decide should they buy the broccoli a healthy food for $1.99 or should they buy the $.99 cheeseburger. We all know you can't just eat broccoli by itself you need to add something to it, plus that cheeseburger to some taste way better. Another scene the little girl wanted some pears, but because they were expensive she was unable to buy them. These were just some scenes that blew my mind, one reason for that was because he has diabetes and that cheeseburger could very well be a trigger food that could spike his sugars, and another is the young girl is trying to pick healthy foods but is unable too because of the price difference. How many times are we faced with the same decisions, go home and cook or feed fast food to our children. It hurts sometimes knowing that I have Type 2 diabetes, and that my kids could have the same one day if they eat the wrong foods.

For all those that don't know Type 2 diabetes is rising among our children in America, in the movie they said 1 in three Americans born after 2000 will contract early onset diabetes, and among minorities, the rate will be 1 in 2. Those numbers are freighting, and I belief is one reason First lady Michelle Obama has addressed the obesity epidemic in our society with a Lets Move campaign. The campaign is seeking help with developing games for kids that will encourage them to move, and with a healthy food choice this will be a success and hopefully reverse the epidemic.

If there is a movie out there that will make you alert to the way food is processed and delivered to you, this movie Food Inc will be it. I will defiantly look at my situation differently now, before I thought it was just heredity and there was nothing I could do. But, there are a lot you and I can do:

1. first we need to make better food choices,

2. second help our kids make better choices,

3. third demand better selections in our neighborhood stores,

4. finally teach those that don't know about healthy choices.

There you have it the cycle will be broken. It doesn't take much to make things happen, we just have to fight our flesh, tap into our natural spirit and fight against the will and deception of others. Food Inc is the movie that will get you fired up to move and change your life situation.
