Your Liver and Your Health: How to Protect Your Liver

Heide Lynne Canlas
Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body.

The liver's main purpose in the body throughout life is detoxification, which simply means eliminating waste from the body. The liver neutralizes harmful compounds and by-products of the food and medicine we take in, detoxifies substances like alcohol, and kills bacteria and other pathogens. It also secretes amino acids, albumin, immunoglobulins which are necessary for resistance, clotting factors, cholesterol, and lipoproteins. These substances may sound fancy, but all of these contribute to the body's natural balance. However, with the everyday toll of detoxifying the body, your liver certainly needs help.

Silymarin, found in herbs like milk thistle, could help the liver stay healthy and strong. It has been employed medicinally for about two millennia and has been prescribed by many physicians for the past two centuries. North American doctors, in fact, prescribed silymarin for disorders of the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and for pelvic congestion and varicose veins, as well. In Europe, silymarin from milk thistle is seen as a restorative and protective agent for many illnesses like cirrhosis and environmental toxins.

Silymarin actually works by stabilizing the liver, more specifically the membranes in its cells. It minimizes or inhibits damage to the liver. In fact, researches conducted and approved by the German Commission E Monographs conclusively prove that silymarin is active in the regeneration of the liver cells. It also prevents oxidative damage to the liver, which is responsible for developing cancer and other illnesses. It also reduces mortality from disorders like cirrhosis.

We take in a lot of toxins everyday, from the food we eat, to the medication we take, and even from the environment, particularly from the air that we breathe. It is, therefore, important to periodically supplement with silymarin to be able to restore the health and functionality of our liver. It is recommended to take at least 100 mg of this everyday, taken from supplements and tablets. Doing this will help in eliminating toxins and ensure that the liver is working in its best condition.
