Your NASCAR Guide to May Events in Charlotte

Ryanick Paige
May is a busy racing month in North Carolina. NASCAR fans come from far and wide to enjoy the festivities. With racing at Lowes motor Speedway and Speed Street taking over the streets of downtown Charlotte as the highlight of activities.

The Craftsmen Truck Series starts the action on Friday night with the Quaker Steak & Lube 200. For 134 laps during the 6th race of the season the trucks will race around the track at speeds over 125 mph.

The Nextel All Star Challenge is on May 19th. With no points at stake and One Million dollars to earn, this provides fans with some serious racing action. 135 miles of fast paced bump and run action. The race is 90 laps broken down into three segments: 40 laps, 30 laps, and 20 laps. Even for the so-so NASCAR fan this is a race to see.

I have never seen anything like it. For 3 days NASCAR takes over downtown Charlotte. Starting May 24th until the 26th , from 11am until midnight NASCAR fans cover the streets. Admission is free and the activities are fabulous. Miller Lite, Budweiser, and Coca Cola each have stages set up hosting concerts everyday of the event. 2007 entertainers include Sara Evans, Puddle of Mudd, Cheap Trick, Joe Nichols, and Diamond Rio just to name a few. Driver autograph sessions and appearances by Nextel drivers are among the top activities. There are great exhibits like the Budweiser horses, NASCAR show cars, simulators, and a pit crew challenge. From the young to the old there is something for everyone on the streets of Charlotte during Speed Street.

Running its 13th race of the year the Busch series runs the Carquest Auto Parts 300 on Saturday the 26th. A little over 1/3 of the way through their 35 race schedule drivers are trying to get into the contention of the Busch Series Championship.

The finale of the events is the Nextel Coca Cola 600. A rare Sunday night event and longest race of the season. The Coca Cola 600 is always Memorial Day weekend and was started to rival the Indy 500. Now it is ran in conjunction to it. They Indy 500 is a day race and a night race make it possible for a few drivers who have the stamina to run both. Tony Stewart is the only driver to accomplish finishing both the Indy 500 and the Coca cola 600 in the same day. John Andretti and Robby Gordon also tried but failed.
So if you can get there or already plan to be there Charlotte, North Carolina is the place to be for 10 days of NASCAR fun
