Your Posture and Your Pain: Fixing Your Posture Can Change Your Life

Abby Willow

Simply changing just your posture can make a huge difference in your quality of life. Pain in the neck, shoulders, and back can be related just to your posture on a daily basis. Since many of us actually suffer from some form of chronic pain at one point or another in our lives, it's important to realize that something so small as posture change can make a supreme difference. Learn how you can change your posture and what simply doing so can do for your overall health and comfort!

Posture position is essentially different for every person, however finding what is called the 'neutral spine position' is the same procedure for everyone. To find the correct posture for sitting (which is what a majority of us spend a lot of time doing), when sitting down, roll your pelvis all the way forward so your spine is arched, then roll your pelvis all the way back so your spine is hunched over. Your posture goal is somewhere in between these two extremes. Continue rolling and reversing your posture until you find the position that works best for you as far as comfort.

Other ways to correct posture include limiting sitting for long periods of time. Every half hour or so, stand and stretch, walk around, or simply just get out of your chair to reduce the tightness in your spine, shoulders, and neck. Simply doing so can make a great change in your discomfort during the day. Try to limit your sitting time to less than an hour at a time, not more than 2 at the most.

Avoid using a laptop, which makes you rest with your arms in front of you and causes shoulder and neck pain. Rather, use a desktop computer that is at a proper height so your arms have room to move. Have a footrest to use when sitting to improve posture, and place a small pillow or rolled towel behind your back or shoulders to support your back better. Every little thing to improve your posture can certainly make a huge difference in your overall health and pain!
