Your Teething Baby and Why Fever Isn't Normal

Abby Willow
Most parents assume that fever is just a part of teething, and just go along with the other symptoms of swollen gums, drooling, crying, and a runny nose (usually from all the crying). Babies all will eventually begin teething between 5 months to a year, and the loss of appetite and fever just go along with the whole teething process, right? A fever is just part of the splitting gums and the irritation in the mouth, isn't t?

Actually, no. A fever is a good thing, per se, as it's the body's way of fighting off infection, but a fever during teething is actually not a normal occurrence. The crying, irritability, even diarrhea from the stress and pain of teething is all normal, but a raised temperature? Fever with your baby while they are teething isn't OK- it's a sign you need to see your pediatrician because something else may be wrong. A fever means your baby is trying to fight off an infection, not that they are uncomfortable with their splitting gums. In other words, if your baby is teething and has a fever at the same time, the fever is definitely a cause of something else way more serious than cutting a tooth, so get to your doctor pronto.

Babies normally do not incur infection or illness while they are teething. Fever is an indication of infection of some sort, and it may be related to the teething process (infection of the gums or mouth), but it should not be excused as a simple teething symptom. If your baby has a temperature over 100 degrees (anything up to 100 degrees is normal) at any time during teething, or your baby becomes very listless and sleeps a lot during teething (a sign of fever and illness) then see your doctor. A fever while teething is definitely not a normal condition.
