Your Treasure is Where Your Heart Is

Wally Sparks
Our society has progressively shifted towards secular belief where individuals are more worried about self and not concerned with any set of rules to govern their lives. Our desires are now more for personal gain such as having the latest television or car to keep up with the neighbors. For many this is what life is all about, materialistic belongings and getting the latest and greatest object. In reality, we should pay heed to Proverbs 10:2-3, which says, "Ill-gotten treasures are of no value but righteousness delivers from death. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked" (NIV, 1978).

As humans, we are inherently religious and for the secular mindset, materialistic belongings replace God, which provides something new to worship and the church is now the local mall. With this mindset, we are continually building our "kingdom" on earth with no regards to what the future might bring. Jesus tells us not to be preoccupied with petty worldly desires saying, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important food, and the body more important than clothes?" (NIV, 1978). The most important lesson of the overall reading in Matthew 6:25-34 is that we should not consume our worries with clothes, food, and shelter because God will provide them and instead we should turn our focus to seeking his kingdom and virtues.

Bringing back Christian Theism would revolutionize how we view the world and ultimately our place in it. Instead of consuming our time making earthly kingdoms, we instead are to usher God's kingdom in to the world by putting the Lord in the center of universe and being his faithful servants. With this vision, we are provided a meaning in our life that our lives will be eternally filled with happiness because where our heart is our treasure is. "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Luke 12:32-34)

Watch, if any far leftist reads this they'll immediately accuse you of wanting to institute a theocracy. I've this message all the time, but it seems like we've developed some way of tuning out things like this "Oh, that's just some lofty philosophical writing, it doesn't really have anything to do with how I should act. After all, how could that have anything to do something as mundane as my everyday life?"
