You're Fired!: The Polite Edition

Making the Terrible Twosome a Little Less Terrible

Vigo
"You're Fired" A terrible twosome that strikes fear into the hearts of both the minimum wage worker and the rich CEO. Money isn't steady unless you're out there making it. It can be the deciding factor between a twenty-something finally moving out of his mother's basement and the only thing keeping a single parent from living on the streets. Jobs are important on every level and the way that people are fired doesn't always help.

When firing an employee, many managers go about it in an extremely negative way. They shout. They yell. They point out every bad thing about the person getting fired. This can make the formerly employed harbor resentment for not only whoever fired them, but for the company itself. In the minimum wage world especially, this can be fatal. Former employees can tell everyone they know that the establishment they used to work at treated them horribly. The food was horrible anyway. The service was non-existent. One bad review doesn't matter. However, when more people who were also fired or who know the fired person see this or hear about it, the reviewing process can get nasty. The internet can be used to bash products and corporations and through the psychology of believing what you read, future consumers will be less inclined to write a good review and less inclined to continue their patronage.

Politeness is key. When an employee is being fired, do not yell. Kill them with kindness is the best way to do it. Explain why they are being fired in a non threatening way. "You continued to do this when I asked you not to". "You failed to follow company standards and policies" and so on. Also tell them what they did right so they are less likely to bad mouth anything. "Even though you're being fired, we valued your work". "You always made sure to be polite to customers". This let's them know that you aren't just completely against them, you're reasons are legitimate, and that they have good qualities to keep at future work places and things to work on or change.
