Youth Debt is a Big Problem

How many articles have you read that inform of the massive problem of the nation's youth being steeped in credit card debt? This is because as soon as they turn eighteen, their mailboxes are filled with credit offers that they except with exuberance not taking into account that heavy debt will soon ensue.

Many teenagers following high school graduation do not pursue a college education. These kids go straight to work and begin to support themselves financially. They need money management skills that must be learned in order to ensure proper execution. Applying for loans, renting an apartment, purchasing insurance, and monthly bills for efficiencies are only a few of the financial endeavors that await them.

These kids are being set up to fall prey to high interest rates that will yield payments too high for their incomes to support. They need to be taught the importance of budgeting appropriately to be able to stay financially afloat in a world filled with pitfalls for debt. So many young adults do not come to understand the benefits of living within one's means. They are simply mesmerized by the numbers on their paychecks and usually cannot find a way to spend their newfound fortune quickly enough.

Increasing debt among America's youth is making the possibility of creating savings accounts for themselves relatively impossible given the high payments that will be incurred because of poor financial decisions. A savings account is a necessity for any working person so that if an emergency arises, such as car repair or losing a job, there is enough money stowed away for the proverbial rainy day.

I know how fulfilling mastering the art of algebraic skill is; however, the mathematical education cannot end there. Personal finance skills are a set of far more practical skills when it comes to public school systems producing responsible young citizens. Second only to the ability of being able to communicate effectively, a strong knowledge of personal finance is the key life skill that will have a massive impact on the quality of young adults' lives.

Until the public school systems recognize that in this area they are doing young adults a huge disservice, the articles on America's youth drowning in debt will continue to be all too prevalent. The changes can be made and America can eliminate this problem from a list of problems that is already too long.
