After watching the Eagles get beatdown by the Dallas Cowboys, I decided to get out of the crib and go checkout Michael Cera's new film Youth in Revolt. The film was based on the 1993 novel written by C.D. Payne. How many times we have seen the bad boys and jerks get the pretty girl, while the nice guy settles for second fiddles? How far would a teenage virgin go to lose his virginity once he met the girl of his dreams? These are several of the issues that are explored in Youth in Revolt. The plot follows Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) as a nerdy sixteen year old teen that goes head over heals crazy over an intelligent and beautiful girl named Sheeni (Portia Doubleday) he meets while on summer vacation in a trailer park. Nick also happens to be a virgin at the time and will give anything to be with her long term, however she's really not all that into him. He develops an alter-ego named Francois, who helps him break out of his shell and win over Sheeni, but also gets him into a whole lot of trouble in the process. This is where the film becomes very humorous because some of the things he's willing to do to be with Sheeni.

I found myself chuckling throughout the entire movie because as a teenager I could relate to Nick's character.

I was a little bit disappointed with the ending.

You will like this movie if you liked: American Pie, The 40 year old virgin, and Me, Myself and Irene.

Grade of the film: B

Overall impression of the film: Even though the storyline and plot was a little bit corny and predictable, this film was funnier than I expected. I'm not going to lie, this film did move kind of slow, so if you decide to see go it, I would recommend going earlier in the day while you're awake. This movie may struggle a little at the box office because it's a movie geared more for audience members between 14-17 years old, but carries an R rating due to sexual references, drug use, and little bit of violence. This is a great film for young couples or singles between the ages of 14-20. Would I see it again? Probably not, but I would definitely add it to my DVD collection.
