Youth Without Youth (2007): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Youth without Youth is a romantic drama starring Tim Roth as Dominic. Dominic is a 70-year-old man on the verge of suicide whose life suddenly changes when he gets struck by lightening. Dominic recovers from the severe burns with a new 40-year-old body, incredible memory, and an endless capacity to learn. Set in the early 1950's, Dominic finds himself trying to elude Hitler's scientists and other wicked forces. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

Tim Roth is excellent in his roll as Dominic, a man who is given a second chance at life and love. Alexandra Maria Lara plays a dual role as Laura his first love that he lets slip away and Veronica, a mysterious woman he rescues. Veronica also gets struck by lightening but instead of getting younger like Dominic did, she gets older as she rediscovers her past lives. Dominic believes his condition is affecting her condition so he decides to leave her. In essence he gives up his life's work to save her. So Dominic was given a second chance at life and love but he messes it up again. That is just my interpretation because I have read so many different reviews/opinions of this movie. It seems like no one can really make up their mind on the point of this film.

Yes the movie is very artsy and confusing and not for everyone but it is still enjoyable. Tim Roth really makes the movie. It may be one of those movies that you have to watch a couple of times to understand the point of the movie. I personally don't have enough patience to watch it again so I will keep my original opinion of the point of the movie. Whatever the hidden meaning behind the movie is, it is still an entertaining film that keeps one thinking throughout the entire movie. I give the movie 3 out of 5 stars.

Tim Roth is the only reason i may end up checking this out, I'm guessing I will be bored out of my mind though
