Check to make sure they have a current license. You want to make sure the shop you choose has a current license and that everything is up to code.
Confirm that the artist has a blood born pathogens certificate. If the artist can not provide one, this may mean that they are not trained in the proper procedures to reduce the health risks associated with tattooing.
The sterilizer should have a current spore test certificate. Tattoo shops are required to send in spore samples monthly to make sure their sterilizer is in good working order, if it is then they receive a certificate. If a certificate can not be provided then you can not be sure that infectious diseases are being killed during the sterilization process.
The tattoo shop should be clean. You don't want to receive a tattoo in a shop that has pet hair, smoke, excessive dust or any other unclean substances in the air.
Look at the artists portfolio to make sure you like their work. Every artist has their own style, you will want to choose an artist that has the same style you are looking for.
Ask the artist any questions you have about their experience, the procedure or any health and safety concerns you may have. The artist should not have a problem answering your questions and explaining things to you.
Once you have your new tattoo you will want to take proper care of it. Follow all of the care instructions given to you by the artist. If your new tattoo itches, give it a light slap. Never pick or scratch at your new tattoo, this can cause the ink to come out or may even lead to infection. Do not wear tight clothes over your new tattoo, which may rub against it. You will not want to go swimming with your new tattoo, or have it exposed to direct sunlight. Also, make sure that your showers are not too hot, this can draw the ink out of your new tattoo. After your tattoo has healed, you will want to wear sunscreen on it when you are out in the sun, this will help to preserve the bright color; as sunlight can act as a bleaching agent to your tattoo. Following these guidelines will help you get a safe tattoo that will last you for years to come!
