Yuba City, CA Restaurant Guide

While Yuba City restaurants aren't necessarily known for their variety and diversity, we still are home to many different kinds of food from American to Chinese, Thai to Greek. Many of these restaurants offer special values and have online fans to boast of. Organized alphabetically by cuisine type and then restaurant name, the less-receptive and least-liked restaurants along with a few chains have been omitted for space. Applebee's. Voted "Best Chain Restaurant" 2009, this Yuba City restaurant offers a wide variety of American fare. Kids get their own menu, as well as those watching their caloric intake. A full bar is also available for those who wish to relax and watch some games. Eat out in the patio area or take advantage of their take out/to go option if you wish to have the food but eat it at home.

Best Western Bonanza Inn Restaurant. AAA describes this Yuba City restaurant as having a "casual setting with some high end, high quality dining"-and Yahoo! Locals agree. Nightly specials and homemade desserts served here with a full bar. Reservations are accepted. AAA discount available.

California Red's Café. While Yahoo! reviews are mixed and Yelpers give it two thumbs down, this Yuba City diner was voted a favorite for "Best Lunch" 2009. If you decide to try it out, ask for their daily specials-they can run as low as $3.99 for lunch.

Chili's Bar and Grill. Come enjoy some pretty good American food and full bar at this Yuba City restaurant, a great place to take the kids (they have a fairly decent sized menu). I've been here a few times and tend to agree with the favorable online reviewers-haven't had a bad experience yet. Love their sirloin and fajita pita. Voted a favorite for "Best Chain Restaurant" 2009.

The Cook 'N' Pot. This Yuba City dive right off Garden Highway is locally famous for its unbelievably fantastic food. The Cook 'N' Pot does not accept credit cards or ATM, so be sure to bring in a little cash if you want to give this place a shot. With its stellar reputation, it's worth at least that.

Hometown Buffet. Online Yahoo! and Yelp! reviewers seem to agree: average food for an average price-and yet Yuba-Sutter locals voted this Yuba City buffet "Best Buffet" 2009. Maybe it has to do with their senior specials and family night? Maybe their "To Go" option? Check out their website for the nutritional content of their food.

International House of Pancakes. The reviews are in: your basic food for-in my own opinion-rather inflated prices (my family of 5 recently had a rather expensive breakfast). Kids love it here, though, and the restaurant often offers coupons in many of the area's local shopping magazines. A good place to go when you're not in the mood for locally owned places and just want a decent meal. Voted a favorite for "Best Breakfast" 2009.

Linda's Soda Bar and Grill. This Yuba City diner has been around for 80 (!) years, serving homemade pies, desserts and soups, making their biscuits and gravy fresh daily. Call or come in and ask for their daily specials. Their servers are attentive and friendly, their food quite tasty, prices fair, and the retro atmosphere relaxing and inviting. Voted "Best Lunch" 2005-2009 and "Best Breakfast" 2009-I totally agree.

Lumberjack's Restaurant. This Yuba City restaurant caters to the "hungry appetite," offering large portions for those who come to dine with the family or friends. Visit the website to grab yourself a coupon and view the current specials (which, psst, ham and eggs at $3.99, people!).

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers. Though better known and touted for their gourmet burgers, Red Robin also serves salads, fish and chips, wraps, sandwiches, and soups--also rice bowls (good for the gluten sensitive among us). Red Robin offers a vegetarian alternative for their burgers as well. This Yuba City restaurant also features a full bar. Voted a favorite for "Best Hamburger and Fries," "Best Chain Restaurant," "Best in Sutter County" and voted "Best Restaurant Service" 2009, it is also a great place to take your kids who will enjoy its fun atmosphere, mini-arcade and the Red Robin mascot who visits on occasion.

Ruthy's Bar and Oven. Located in the Hillcrest Plaza, Ruthy's offers a full bar (mimosa's for brunch, too, I hear), casual dress, and a place to take large groups. Reservations are accepted, though you may not want to bring your kids to this quiet and calm atmosphere. Yelp! reviewers have given this Yuba City restaurant a 3 star rating with Yahoo! Locals giving them 3.5.

Sizzler. This Yuba City eatery was voted a favorite "Best Buffet" 2009, though it's more than just a buffet, serving steak, seafood, ribs, chicken and salads. Kids will be happy with their choice of burger, salad bar, or steak.

2 Bits Café. This quaint, popular local diner has literally risen from the ashes, coming back from a devastating fire at the end of 2008. It also serves a great breakfast and lunch, just ask Yelp! and Yahoo! reviewers. Ask for their daily specials. Take out available.

Antonio's Quick Lunch. Home of the 75 cent taco, this little dive restaurant is known in Yuba City for its cheap prices and good food as the long lines will attest. Twelve Yelp! reviewers give it a 3 star rating but mostly, it seems, due to its status as a dive. The four Yahoo! Locals are far more lenient, bestowing five stars. Either way, Yuba-Sutter voted Antonio's a favorite for "Best Taco" and "Best Burrito" 2009.

Clark Avenue Coffee Shop. This renovated gas station has a lot to offer for breakfast and lunch, including Panini's, pastries, and vegetarian choices. WiFi is also available here, as is indoor seating. Four Yahoo! Locals gave it 4.5 stars with reviewers lauding the customer service. Voted a favorite "Coffee and Coffee Drinks" for The Best of Yuba Sutter 2009.

Kaffe 'T' Latta. While online reviews on this little Yuba City café are sparse (read: only one), I had to add this to the list. Kaffe 'T' Latta is a pleasant surprise, serving more than just coffee but soups, sandwiches, salads, wraps and vegetarian dishes, too. Breakfast is served until 3pm except on Saturdays when it is served all day. Beer and wine are also options, as are smoothies. Kaffe 'T' Latta, open since Spring 2000, boasts making "nearly everything" off their menu from scratch. This café provides a comfortable spot to read while you drink your coffee-or to surf the net as WiFi is available. Call also for your catering needs.

Sundowner Café. One Yahoo! Local enjoyed the food and value offered here. An InsiderPages reviewer agrees, saying "Retro dining and affordability this place is wonderful! The food is generous and great tasting, the seating is comfortable and inviting. The space is small but the dining experience is large!"

Taste of China Super Buffet. Yahoo! Locals agree that Taste of China is the place to get your Chinese food in Yuba City, yet Yelpers aren't so sure. One reviewer said "You cannot buy a hamburger, french fries and a coke for less than all-you-can-eat buffet at Taste Of China." Others comment on the not-so-cleanliness of the place. But all seem to agree: This Yuba City Chinese restaurant is touted as spacious and kid friendly, ready with senior discounts and great variety.

Yuba Buffet. This Yuba City buffet was voted "Best Buffet" 2009 and has some online fans, too. Come see the indoor fish pond, enjoy a military and senior discount--and some exotic fare as well. Frog legs, anyone?

Fine Dining

The City Café. Tucked in blossoming downtown Yuba City, The City Café is full of lights, ambiance, fantastic food and service. A full bar is available, reservations are accepted and dress is described as "casual dressy." Raters and reviewers as well as other locals seem to love it. Voted "Best Patio Dining," "Best When Someone Else is Paying" and was a favorite for "Best Fine Dining" 2009.

The Refuge Restaurant and Lounge. This AAA two diamond rated Yuba City restaurant was voted "Best Fine Dining" and a favorite for "Best When Someone Else is Paying" 2009. Prime rib, steak, and seafood are among the choices on the menu, as well as a full bar. Reservations are suggested, dress is "dressy casual." Check out Yahoo! Local if interested-while a few people were disappointed (and on numerous nights), the consensus seems to be that this is a place to check out especially if you're looking for a quiet place to take a date. I've always enjoyed it.

Fotine's Simply Greek Café. The only Greek restaurant in Yuba City offers a market and deli, lunch and dinner, catering and banquets; dine in or take out. Come enjoy gyros and, as one Yelp! reviewer writes, it's "to die for" orzo pasta.

Dancing Tomato Café. This fun, family friendly restaurant's website proclaims that you'll love their food, or it's free. The Dancing Tomato offers traditional Italian fare with some American favorites added in. Kids will enjoy the paper tablecloths to scribble on and you'll enjoy the food and full bar. Reservations are accepted. Love it or hate it, Yahoo! Locals, this place was voted a favorite for "Best Italian Food," "Best in Sutter County" and "Best Breakfast" 2009. Dancing Tomato has also won the Best Independent Restaurant Assocation (BIRA) award for "Best Breakfast" and "Best Family Dining."

Marcello's Italian Restaurant. Twenty reviewers can't be wrong. This casual Yuba City restaurant has been family owned and operated since 2005 and offers endless pasta night every night. Marcello's was voted "Best Italian Food" and a favorite for "Best Restaurant Service" 2009. This is a great, quiet place to take a date. Beer and wine served, reservations accepted.

Strings Italian Café. Situated next to JCPenney in the Yuba-Sutter Mall, this Yuba City Italian café came in second for "Best Italian Food" 2009, yet Yahoo! Locals aren't so flattering. That said, my husband and I frequent this restaurant; he thoroughly enjoys their minestrone soup, we both love their salad and even though the bread has changed, it's still fantastic. We've never had issues with the waiting staff or the food. Be sure to check them out on Wednesday nights for all-you-can-eat pasta. Senior discounts and kids specials are also available.

Taste of India. Eleven Yelp! reviewers have rated Taste of India 4.5 stars and Yahoo! Locals agree, calling it "the best Indian food in Yuba City" and one proclaiming she "literally [has] painful cravings for Taste of India." Other reviewers mention its vegetarian options and full bar. Though I have not been here yet, I intend to give this restaurant a try after online reviews and reviews from East Indian friends. Finally, this casual Yuba City diner was voted a favorite for "Best Restaurant Service" 2009.

Japanese

Chikara Japanese Sushi. Established in 2002, online reviewers at both Yelp! and Yahoo! seem to agree: worth a try if you're in the mood for Japanese. This local Japanese restaurant is described as featuring a comfortable sushi bar prepared by an experienced sushi chef. Take out is available. Nigiri, sashimi and appetizers also served.

Kenzo Sushi. Established in 2007, this Yuba City Japanese restaurant offers, as one Yahoo! reviewer stated, "custom regional menu with things like the HWY 99 roll, and the True California roll." Another gushed, "love their bento box lunches; dinner menu is very good; try the sushi." This modern and exciting eatery offers Nigri and Sashimi sushi and offers a "sushi boat" consisting of a combination of temaki, nigri and sashimi.

Mexican

Casa Lupe. Citizens voted Casa Lupe a favorite Yuba City Mexican restaurant for 2009. Featuring traditional Mexican food, vegetarian options, and a full bar, it's a popular dining destination. Be aware if you want to visit this place on the weekends, though: lines and waits can get long...though Yelp! reviewers aren't so sure that's a good sign.

Chipotle Mexican Grill. While Yahoo! Locals and Yelp! reviews are mixed, Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal (among many others) have only good things to say about this Yuba City restaurant. Come enjoy a little "Tex-Mex" as well as the vegetarian options available. They're also responsive to the gluten-free dieters among us-just ask and be sure to tell them if you're especially sensitive and they'll make a special effort to avoid "cross-contamination." Check out their website for more information-it's really a fantastic site. Voted "Best Burrito" in the Yuba-Sutter area 2009.

Cilantros. Found on the southern part of town between Plumas and Shasta Street, Cilantros offers traditional Mexican fare. This Yuba City diner also offers catering and is available to rent out for up to 48 people (with two weeks notice). Yelpers all agree, bestowing five stars while Yahoo! Local reviewers give it four out of five stars, loving both the owner, Antonio, and the homemade mole and "the best Mexican food we have ever ate. Hands down, no question." Worth a shot for sure.

Costa Vida. Located in the Yuba City Walmart shopping center, Costa Vida offers hand-crafted tortillas, fresh cilantro lime rice, black or pinto beans to side with your entrée made up of sweet pulled pork (oh my!), shredded chicken or beef or raspberry chipotle chicken to grace your plate. For dessert they serve flan and tres leches along with other, more American type fare. They're also rather health-conscious with available vegetarian alternatives. Yelp reviewers agree (and so do I): this is definitely a place to check out. Call for their weekly specials-for example, Monday nights kids meals are free with paying adult.

El Zarape. A popular Yuba City Mexican diner, Yahoo! Local reviews are mixed and Yelpers are ho-hum, but be assured: this place has its fans. El Zarape was voted "Best Mexican Food" 2009.

La Unica's Fresh Mex. According to Yuba-Sutter Wiki, La Unica's features lunch and dinner, family fine dining, imported and domestic beers, catering, orders to go and a bakery. Three out of three Yahoo! Locals seem like they can't say enough good things about this place, too. The most recent said, "The ingredients are fresh, the place is clean, the employees are always friendly and helpful." Worth a look? I think so.

Tortilleria Flores Mexican Restaurant. Not in the best part of town, perhaps, but Yahoo! reviewers and Yelpers seem to love it. This Yuba City Mexican restaurant is open 6:00am-10:00pm,7 Days A Week. With over 23 years in the area, Tortilleria also caters for groups 50-1000. Their menu includes authentic tortas, sopes, and seafood specialties.

The Mongolian BBQ. Earning 3.5 stars from local internet Yuba City restaurant reviewers, this is the one and only place in town to grab dinner and a show à la Benihanas. The kids will enjoy watching the chefs cook their food as well as any groups you want to take out for lunch or dinner.

Round Table Pizza. Located at the Feather Down Shopping Center on Stabler Lane and the Kmart shopping center on Gray Avenue, this Yuba City pizzeria is a good place to go when you just want something familiar. Pricing can be a bit expensive compared to other places. This pizzeria will host your next birthday party or group get-together. Lunch specials, delivery, beer, wine and a salad bar are available. Pubs

The Happy Viking Sports Pub and Eatery. This Yuba City pub features pizza, 55 draft beers, pool and sports on 20+ HDTVs (one 84" flat screen!). It offers a family friendly place to take the kids, who have their own menu, area and arcade. Monday night football specials are also available. Internet chatter is largely positive, and the Yuba-Sutter area voted it "Best Happy Hour" 2009.

Seafood

Fish and Chips. Both Yahoo! Local and Yelp! reviews are excellent for this one and only local Yuba City seafood restaurant...unless you like fast-food seafood like Long John Silvers. Ew. My husband enjoys this restaurant's fish and chips and we plan on taking our children here for their introduction to fish since we don't often make it to the coast (and I don't cook fish...yet). If you're like me and not a big fish fan, don't worry: they also offer teriyaki dishes and various sandwiches to enjoy.

Steakhouses

Cool Hand Luke's. Featuring their own "saloon," Cool Hand Luke's is the newest joint in town. Come enjoy some campfire beans to go with your sourdough rolls as you wait for your dinner. A full bar and your sodas in quart mason jars await! While some disagree, this Yuba City steakhouse was voted "Best New Restaurant" and "Best Steak" as well as a favorite for "Best When Someone Else is Paying" and "Best Fine Dining" 2009. This Yuba City steakhouse restaurant may be slightly pricey, but I think the food is totally worth it.

Sopa Thai Cuisine. With the décor and furniture largely ordered from Thailand by the Thailand native owner, Sopaworn "Soupy" Savedra, Sopa Thai Cuisine is about as authentic as you're going to get with traditional seating, wait staff in traditional Thai clothing, and a massive menu of over 60 items. This Yuba City restaurant touts its "award winning restaurant featured in Sunset Magazine, and since visited by famous sports players and diplomats." A banquet room for your large groups is available as well as a gift shop for those interested. Their fantastic website offers a full menu to interested parties. Yelpers and Yahoo! Locals think you'll agree: definitely worth a look if you're looking for some different but fantastic food-a hard find in Yuba City.
