Yum's Express in Metro Washington D.C. Area Offers the Best Chinese Take Out

Sometimes ya just gotta have it. What usually drives me to Chinese take out is General Tso's Chicken. Man I love that stuff. This day, however, when I walked into Yum's Express a very nice gal at the counter talked me into trying the Happy Family instead.

But I'm getting ahead of myself again.. heh.

Yum's is in a shopping center at the corner of Highway 1 and Cherry Hill Road in College Park, Md, the upper edge of the greater DC area. It's a little nicer than most take out joints of this genre with the walls half textured wallpaper, and half a Burlwood kinda veneer. There are huge plants everywhere in colorful pots. There aren't a lot of places to sit, but you won't be here long. This is take out, remember? Yum's does not deliver.

I was greeted by a big huge smile and a hearty Hello. This is always nice to see, especially when most fast food kinda places are full of employees who would rather be at the beach and don't hesitate to show it. There is a big menu board above the counter and take out menus on the counter. They have been busy every time I've come in, no matter the time of day.

So like I said, I usually go with my standard General Tso's Chicken which runs $8.75 here, and is pretty good compared to other places. It's a very generous portion and the sauce is on the sweet side like I like it. Also, they never raise an eyebrow when I ask for extra sauce.. I like to pour it on my rice.

One day though we (meaning I) got talked into the Happy Family for $10.65. This is sliced pork, shrimp, beef, chicken, and lobster all sauteed with broccoli in a brown sauce. I was disappointed. I mean, it tasted good. But there was only one small piece of lobster, and two shrimp. The rest was all the other stuff. What a let down. The sauce would have been excellent had it not been watered down, too. Bummer, man. This comes with white rice.

My partner in crime at the time kinda leans in favor of their Kung Pao Chicken for $8.20, but he orders it extra hot which is toooo spicy for me to determine if I would like it or not. He likes it real well though and they do spice it to the perfect degree for him.

So basically they have the same generic Chinese menu that you see everywhere, but the food is on the upper spectrum for the most part (aside from the Happy Family anyway). The staff is very nice always, and the place is kept extremely clean at all times.

They have about 20 lunch specials which only run $4.30-$5.10 and are served with fried rice. It doesn't say it, but they do give me egg rolls with these. heh. Really, the only thing I haven't liked from here is that Happy Family. You are pretty safe with just about anything else.

I gotta go with 4 stars here. Not a bad choice at all if you're in the area and having one of those cravings. I would have ordered from here more often if they only delivered....
