Waiting for Australian Authorities to Verify Leg is Zahra's

Three weeks into the case of the missing North Carolina girl, Zahra Baker, police have found a prosthetic leg that they believe belongs to the girl and a mattress that her father and stepmother threw out days before reporting her missing.

Zahra Baker is a 10 year old disabled girl with a prosthetic leg and two hearing aids. She was reported missing on October 9, 2010 by her father, Adam Baker. It was an unusual case right from the beginning because there was a fire at their residence earlier in the day which was reported by the family, but when they reported Zahra missing, the father said he had not seen her since 2:30 a.m.

The Zahra Baker case just keeps getting stranger as we learned that a ransom note addressed to Adam Baker's boss was found outside on the family car. The note was for Mr.Coffey's daughter. Adam Baker told police that he thought the kidnappers had taken the wrong girl. Police checked on Mr. Coffey and his daughter and they were both fine.

A fire and then a ransom note for someone else?

Police then arrested Elisa Baker, the wife of Adam Baker and stepmother to Zahra. She allegedly admitted to writing the ransom note but denies having anything to do with Zahra's disappearance. Reports began coming in that Elisa, thirteen years older than Adam, was abusive towards Zahra. Friends and neighbors had even turned her into social services which apparently did not help the poor girl. Elisa Baker was arrested on obstruction of justice charges and remains in jail. Her bond has been raised due to the fact that police believe she is a flight risk.

Adam Baker was also arrested on unrelated charges, but posted bail and has since been released.

The Baker's have only been married for just over a year. Adam was living in Australia with his daughter when he met Elisa online. They then moved to the U.S. and Adam married Elisa.

Police have recently found a prosthetic leg in the bushes near a prior residence of Elisa Baker. They believe that the leg belongs to Zahra, but they have not yet received confirmation from Australian authorities who are trying to verify the serial number.

Authorities have also found another clue in the Zahra Baker case. While searching a nearby landfill, they found two mattresses that they believe came from the Baker home. The police think that the Baker's may have dumped the mattresses in the landfill in early October, just days before Adam Baker reported Zahra Baker missing. Law enforcement is currently testing the mattresses for DNA to confirm if they were from the Baker home and if they were Zahra's.

The police do not hold out much hope for the Zahra Baker case. They have already said that the girl is presumed dead and that they think she met with some kind of foul play. God bless this beautiful little girl and give the police the evidence that they need to prosecute the offenders.
