While I have amassed a multi-functional wardrobe that works well for traveling, I often find when I lay out the clothes for an upcoming trip that I am missing a critical item or two-the hemp tote bag I normally use to transport my gear isn't dressy enough for the business casual look I need for a conference, the weather forecast for my destination indicates an unexpected cold front and I haven't gone winter clothes shopping yet, the walking shoes that I wanted to wear have a tear that I just discovered, and other pre-travel clothing and accessory snafus I have experienced over the years.
Unfortunately, I often make these realizations after it's too late for me to head out for even a half day of shopping. Yes, I could order items online but all too often I find I'm charged for the cost of shipping back any items that don't fit. Also, there's usually a short window when I can return items. So I am stuck with limited options-travel sans a few needed items or hoping a worn item will last the trip without giving out or purchase merchandise and then try to squeeze in a block of time to return these items that don't fit right when I'm in the midst of preparing to travel.
Recently I discovered Zappos.com, an online clothing store that seems to solve my travel shopping dilemma. This store began by selling shoes online in 1999 and now features over 1,000 brands of clothing, shoes and accessories for women, men and children as well as housewares and beauty items.
Thanks to a shopping tool on their website, you can put together an outfit based on a specific occasion like "date night" or "weekend in the city, or find an outfit designed to fit your specific personality style. If you're at a loss for how to put together a particular look, you can click on a specific outfit that's already been accessorized. Those who consider themselves "fashionistas" can skim through the "trends" or "what's new" sections to pick up on the latest styles. Customer service is available 24/7 via live internet chat or calling their 800 number should you have any Qs prior to making a selection.
Given I am very budget minded during these pressing economic times, I am always on the hunt for a bargain. Hence, I appreciate that the website allows me to search for items by price. For example, when I was looking for a dressy tote bag, I began my search by clicking on the "bags & handbag" tab on the Zappos.com home page. By clicking lowest price and then highest price, I noticed they featured 8,072 bags ranging in price from $13.50 to $3,045.00. With a few clicks, I was able to customize my search by a range of attributes such as brand, pattern, or strap style. So there was a bag that will work for just about every budget and style preferences. Also, if I find I have a bit of time to go bargain hunting Zappos.com's sale section allows me to skim for any clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories that are on sale.
Free standard shipping is offered on all orders with the package arriving within 4 to 5 business days. Expedited shipping is available for a reasonable fee should you need the item sooner. Check their website for information on their range of express shipping options, as well as information on shipping items sent to U.S. Territories, PO Boxes, or Military APO/FPO addresses. At present, they do not ship overseas.
Another option is to have the items shipped to your destination proving of course that someone will be there who can accept the package. Also, if you're planning a trip with multiple activities such as a week at the beach followed by a hiking expedition, you can pack along your beach gear and then arrange for Zappos to ship the hiking gear to your hotel or resort. This option works if you can arrange to have your beach gear mailed back to your home if possible so you can continue to travel light by only carrying the gear that you actually need.
Thanks to Zappos.com's extensive measurement guides, so far all items sent to me fit perfectly. But if you're not exactly sure which size, style or color works best for you, you can order multiple items and then return those items that you don't need. Return shipping is free. Also, as you have 365 days to return an item, if you find yourself getting crazed getting ready to depart, you can hold off prepping any returns until you return from your trip.
Along those lines, Zappos.com could be the perfect way to ship Christmas gifts. These items can be waiting for you when you get to your holiday destination, thus eliminating the hassle of loading down your luggage. N the event your gift isn't picture perfect, you can use Zappos.com's return service to leave behind a gift that's just right.
