Zdenko Ivanusic provides a nice blend of contemporary smooth jazz combined with a modern fusion and improvisation, which for this listener is the best of both worlds.
Lost In HTML is such an appropriate title for these high tech days we live in, even for a band that sounds like it came out of another era. For an independent band, the internet is fair game, a chance for anyone to display a creative talent in an open forum.
The title of this album is up to each individual listener to apply in his or her own world. For this listener, I can totally relate to the fact that it is so easy to get lost on the web. Did you ever go to look for something on the web, finally find it and wonder how you got there? It happens all the time. Although this may be commonplace for surfers of the World Wide Web, it is more common to find someone like Croatian artist Zdenko Ivanusic bringing his music to those in search of capable indie artists.
Zdenko sent me everything electronically, the entire album, art and liner notes. Was it easier and more economical for the artist? Well of course. Does today's music fan prefer to purchase their music this way? I hear another resounding yes echoing from every corner of the planet. I am one of those music fans that have been through every format and I have my likes and dislikes of every one. Capturing this music digitally did not change my listening experience that much, only in the sense of holding something tangible in my hands, it sounded fine and I enjoyed it.
Lost In HTML is a first-rate group of tracks dipping into the well of the future in many ways then looking back to the past for inspiration in the same instance. Ivanusic plays tenor and alto saxophone, thus the focus is on his abilities to play the brass and a balance of the emphasis is placed on everything else in between through his band mates on acoustic bass, drums, trumpet and electric guitar. He is a selfless leader, allowing each member of the band to find their way whilst he gently leads them down each path adroitly.
Fans of contemporary, smooth, traditional and fusion jazz will find enjoyment in this recording. There is something for each listener to latch on to and if you allow it to sweep you away after a few listens you may find yourself coming back for more, I did.
