It seems like there's an animated movie or TV show coming out every week based on a new toy or stuffed animal. I guess this practice is nothing new. It's been this way since the Dawn of Motion Pictures. One of the latest additions to the club are the Zhu Zhu Pets. These furry little hamsters have scored their own straight-to-DVD commerc… er, sorry-movie entitled "Quest for Zhu."
"Zhu Zhu Pets: Quest for Zhu" is "the heartwarming tale of four lively young teens (who just happen to be hamsters) on a quest to find the Palace of Zhu, where they believe all their dreams will come true. Join the feisty and lovable Pipsqueak as she gets swept away to the other side of the Zhuniverse. On her adventure, she befriends Chunk, Num Nums and Mr. Squiggles, and when they arrive at the Palace of Zhu, they realize it is just the beginning of their remarkable journey. A mean-spirited and controlling reptilian creature, Mezhula, tries to stand in the way of making all of their dreams come true but, by working together, our true Zhu heroes save the day! Pipsqueak realizes she already had everything she ever dreamed of and all she really wants is to find a way back home."
Honestly, these things look just like hamster versions of the Care Bears. My wife and kids loved "Zhu Zhu Pets: Quest for Zhu." Besides the hamster characters, there were other animals that had been "Zhu Zhued" (so to speak) like zebras and skunks. Needless to say, this is perfect for toddlers.
The animation for "Zhu Zhu Pets: Quest for Zhu" was good quality. It had the look of the newer "Care Bears" movies. Each Zhu Zhu seems to be a different color and almost everything in Zhu Zhu Land appears to be some shade of pastel. They should be a big hit at Easter.
"Zhu Zhu Pets: Quest for Zhu" comes with a couple sing-along music videos as bonus features. I received the Gift Set that came with two Zhu Zhu figurines. This movie is only released in a regular DVD format, so those keeping their fingers crossed for HD Zhu Zhu fun will have to deal with the disappointment.
