As a mother, I was concerned about Zhu Zhu Pets safety because my daughter asked for one for Christmas. The Los Angeles Times reported Zhu Zhu Pets Are Safe, U.S. Agency Says.
According to the LA Times, agency spokesman Scott Wolfson stated, "The Consumer Product Safety Commission confirmed today that the popular Zhu Zhu toy is not out of compliance with the antimony or other heavy-metal limits of the new U.S. mandatory toy standard. We will still do our own independent testing at CPSC. But we're confident today and can confirm that the toy does not violate the very protective antimony standard that applies to all toys in the United States."
With millions of toys recalled since 2007, Zhu Zhu Pets rumors became a major concern. Add the fact Zhu Zhu Pets are actually made in China and even more people grew worried.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission talked with Zhu Zhu pets maker Cepia LLC, looked at the product and checked out independent testing reports to conclude the toy is safe.
GoodGuide apparently had inaccurate testing methods. Their testing showed Mr. Squiggles contained elevated levels of antimony. GoodGuide ultimately apologized for comparing its finding to federal standards.
Cepia stated they were falsely accused and indicated GoodGuide should have spoken to them first before issuing public statements.
Do you think the Zhu Zhu Pets safety crisis was a promotional ploy or an attempt to thwart the sales of these robotic hamsters? While Zhu Zhu Pets are priced at only $9.99 at ToysRUs, the habitats and accessories cost much more.
Ultimately, we've decided to take Zhu Zhu pets off our daugher's Christmas list. We would rather be safe than sorry. Besides, there are millions of other non-controversial toys to choose from.
Will you be buying Zhu Zhu Pets for holiday gifts?
