Zicam Versus Cold-EEZE from a Consumer’s Perspective

Steve Helmer

Even though I'm not a big believer in home remedies, I do like taking zinc whenever I have a cold or feel like I'm getting one. I've been doing this for the past couple of years and, even though I can't prove the treatment works, I will say it does seem to work for me every time.

Up until recently, the only zinc product I would purchase was Zicam. It was the first one I tried and it worked so I really had no incentive to try something different. But, Zicam is kind of expensive and, now that I can't use my medical flex account to buy over-the-counter products, I have been looking for cheaper alternatives. So, recently, I decided to try Cold-EEZE

When it came to price, Cold-EEZE easily beat Zicam. I was able to buy a package of Cold-EEZE lozenges for $3 less than even the store-brand rip-off of Zicam. As someone who is constantly on a tight budget, that's going to be a big incentive to buy this.

I also didn't notice any difference when it came to effectiveness. Much like with Zicam, I started taking the Cold-EEZE at the same time I started experiencing symptoms and it worked just as well as the more expensive zinc cold therapy. I had a slight cough and sniffles for a couple of days but managed to avoid the nasty cold my wife had.

Zicam, however, does beat out Cold-EEZE in a couple categories. One of these categories is the variety of forms it comes in. Cold-EEZE only comes in lozenge form. Zicam offers everything from a mist to a chewable form. I'm personally partial to the "Rapid Melts." I'm not opposed to lozenges. But, if someone was, Cold-EEZE would have a big disadvantage in that category.

Another thing I found I liked better about Zicam was the taste. Both products leave a metal-like after taste. But, the Cold-EEZE lozenges don't taste that great to start with. As a result of that, I do find it hard to keep a Cold-EEZE lozenge in my mouth until it completely dissolves and usually end up spitting it out after a few minutes. Zicam, in comparison, has a decent flavor and is much more enjoyable to take.

As a result of those last two things, I do feel Zicam is the better product. Cold-EEZE is definitely more affordable and is a good alternative if you can't afford the more expensive Zicam. But, even though it is more expensive, the Zicam does give you more for your money.
