Zocor Oral: Side Effects and Complications

Ann Olson
Zocor Oral, or simvastatin, is a statin drug used to reduce cholesterol production by the liver. Doctors commonly prescribe it to reduce a person's heart disease risk, a leading cause of death in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Like all statin drugs, Zocor Oral isn't safe for everyone. There have been certain side effects and complications reported, including muscle problems and liver damage. To avoid any possible side effects or complications, patients are advised to speak with their local healthcare provider to discuss the following:

- Any medications, supplements or herbs you are currently taking.

- If you have any pre-existing illnesses, such as liver or kidney disease.

- If you have an addiction to alcohol (alcoholism).

- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or currently nurse.

Depending on your circumstances, your doctor may recommend a dose change or recommend taking a different drug. Zocor Oral, for example, can cause fetal damage, making it unsafe for pregnant women. Alcohol can also exacerbate its effects on the liver.

Side Effects of Zocor Oral

According to MedicineNet.com, people usually do not experience any side effects. It is a possibility, however. Side effects caused by Zocor Oral include:

- Stomach upset, cramping

- Muscle pain, muscle weakness

- Fever

- Fatigue

- Changes in urine output

Stomach upset is commonly reported by patients who use this drug. Zocor Oral can also increase your risk for a serious muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, which can cause a breakdown of muscle fibers. Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain or weakness, fever, changes in urine output and fatigue. If you experience any muscle pain or weakness with these symptoms, contact you local healthcare provider immediately.

Complications of Zocor Oral

There have been some complications caused by Zocor Oral. WebMD.com describes these complications as "rare but serious".

Possible complications of Zocor Oral include:

- Breakdown of muscle fibers (rhabdomyolysis)

- Yellowing of eyes and skin (jaundice)

- Liver damage

- Harm to an unborn fetus

Rhabdomyolysis is the most common complication caused by Zocor Oral. Left untreated, rhabdomyolysis can lead to kidney failure and death, making immediate treatment essential for survival. Zocor Oral also rarely causes liver damage, leading to serious side effects such as jaundice, severe stomach pain and persistent nausea. In pregnant women, Zocor Oral can transfer from the mother to the fetus, causing fetal damage.
