Zoloft Side Effects and Other Useful Information

Tara Cellars
Zoloft is one of the many drugs prescribed every day as a treatment for many diseases, such as depression and OCD. I have personally been on Zoloft before as a treatment for bipolar disorder. It was not a very good experience. Zoloft is an antidepressant that is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. There are many side effects that you should talk to your doctor about. There are some that you should call your doctor immediately for also. And then there are some side effects that might go away after you are on it for a while.

You should immediately call your doctor if you start having more anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, or if you are highly agitated. You should also call the doctor immediately if your symptoms of depression worsen or you have suicidal thoughts. More of the side effects that you should notify your doctor on are seizures, tremors, incoordination, confusion, and fast heart beat.

There are also many side effects that occur more commonly in patients. You should still call your doctor because these are serious side effects even though they occur more commonly. These include, but are not limited to, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in appetite, changes in weight including significant weight loss or weight gain, low libido, and impotence.

You should also not take certain medications with Zoloft. These include tramadol, phenytoin, lithium, digitoxin, blood thinners, and any other antidepressants, medications that control your heart rate, almotriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, frovatriptan, sumatriptan, and naratriptan.

Do not ever stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first. You need to wean off the medication or you will experience withdrawal. Also do not drink grapefruit juice while on this medication, it will not work properly.

I experienced many of the side effects while I was on the medication. I remember having no feeling whatsoever other than anger. I was highly agitated, and became angry for no reason. I also experienced tremors, which I still have to this day. I shake when I concentrate. This is the only thing that could have caused it. I was on Zoloft for almost a year and then I quit taking it because I couldn't stand myself. I would rather cry all the time than be emotionless. The side effects were much worse than being off the medication. When I quit the medication my feelings returned, but as I mentioned, the tremors did not subside. Take note that everyone reacts to medications differently. Your experience might be better than mine.
