Zombieland (2009) Movie Review

Amber J. Cabrera
I've never been one to be a fan of blood and gore zombie movies. Ever since I was a kid and channel surfed across a midnight showing of Day of the Dead on TV (of which up until that point, I had no clue how icky the human imagination could get), it's never been my particular genre of preferred movie entertainment. So, when I saw the previews for Zombieland on TV, I wasn't initially interested.

It took a couple more times for me to actually watch the commercial previews to notice it. When I did, I found that it looked to be a humorous twist on the classic zombie movies. My friend mentioned that he wanted to see it, and that was enough for me to give it a shot.

Zombieland (directed by Ruben Fleischer, with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Emma Stone)is indeed a spoof-like movie about quite literally the last humans on earth who have to fight their way through virus-infected humans turned zombies, in a quest to find just one zombie-free place left on Earth.

Yes, Zombieland had a bit of blood and gore, but it was enveloped around such absurd hilarity I didn't mind so much. Columbus (Eisenberg) is our "hero" who narrates the movie for us. He meets Tallahassee (Harrelson), a one man zombie killing machine with a twisted idea of fun and crazy sense of humor. They meet a couple of sisters, Wichita and Little Rock (Breslin and Stone) and all decide to stick together. Incidentally, they all call each other by the names of the towns that they are from in an effort to keep their emotional attachments toward each other at bay.

Harrelson is great playing the role of a borderline psychotic with an unnatural obsession to find the last Twinkie on Earth. He entertains us with his one-liners in all the right places, as well as his philosophy about the situation in which they all find themselves. His performance in this film is quite possibly his road back into the mainstream Hollywood spotlight.

There is another fantastic surprise appearance by a Hollywood legend, which I will not spoil for you here, but it is extremely funny the way he plays into the plot.

Whether or not you enjoy classic zombie movies and you can withstand a substantial amount of (obvious)Hollywood blood and gore effects , then I would definitely recommend that you watch this movie for its silly, but entertaining value.
