Zumbais an aerobic fitness program using Latin dance moves such as salsa, meringue, cha cha, cumbia, and others such as hip hop, and calypso. Classes at different levels are offered so that everyone can participate in the fun. There are Zumba classes for seniors and beginners, kid classes and water classes too. As of 2009 there are 20,000 Zumba instructors in 35,000 countries. The Zumba craze is taking hold across the globe.
I participate in Zumba classes at my local YMCA and the class fee is included in my monthly membership. The Zumba class is offered 6 times a week by 4 different instructors. What I have noticed is that each instructor has a different style of teaching and approach to the class. My favorite instructor has high energy and thoroughly teaches each step. She will even take time after class to help with steps if needed. Another aspect I like about her is she is continually coming up with new music and new steps so there is not a chance of too much repetition and becoming bored with the workout.
Zumba instructors need to complete a one day workshop to become certified to teach the basic class. This insures that the basic steps are being taught and leads to continuity in Zumba exercise classes.
Zumba is a great way to lose weight, strengthen your cardio endurance, and stay fit. For me Zumba is not only a great exercise program, but it is a place to make new friends and have so much fun that I forget that I am exercising.
At my last class there were testimonies given about weight loss. Two women have been attending the Zumba classes for 6 months; one has lost 40 pounds the other 35 pounds. Both gave the weight loss credit to Zumba and both testified that they have stuck with the program because of the great fun they experience dancing the weight away!
