Zumba - Dance Your Way to Fitness

Bev Cohen
First of all, what is Zumba? Zumba Fitness is a choreographed dance routine that combines aerobic exercise with steps from Latin dance music such as salsa, cha cha, and merengue. The correct pronunciation is Zoomba.

Zumba is fasted paced and is a total body workout. It's extremely popular and seems to be sweeping the nation right now. What is one of the most common reasons that people stop exercising? You got it - boredom. Well, Zumba takes care of that. It's upbeat, lively and fun! Zumba dancing is done to the beat of music. It almost feels as though you're out in a club dancing. And it certainly is not boring! The dance routines includes moves that are continually changing.

If you are looking for a mild workout, then Zumba is not for you! You will work and move and jump and bounce and sweat! A lot! Zumba instructors are expert in the Latin dance moves and it shows! Trying to keep up can be difficult. Just when you think you have the dance steps down, the routine changes to new music with new moves! But that's part of the fun. If you get too tired and just can't keep up, modify the moves. Instead of swinging your arms over your head, swing them at your sides. Instead of jumping off the ground during certain moves, keep your feet on the ground while doing the moves. Over time your level of fitness will improve and you'll be able to keep up better.

Zumba Fitness provides a great cardio workout and will help you to lose weight and stay fit. Zumba provides resistance training to tone your muscles, including the abdominals, which so many of us are worried about. Zumba will push you to your limits, but if it was easy, it wouldn't work as well and there would be nothing to strive for.

Lastly, the motivation you will get from a group of people doing a workout to lively music is phenomenal! Sometimes it can even provide your dose of laughter for the day when the dance moves are especially difficult and everyone in the class seems to be doing different moves!

Give Zumba fitness a shot. You've got nothing to lose but body fat!
